This post in it's broader term is to address the African nation, but permit me to use Nigeria, as the case study, as it's where I call home.
Everyone complains when things go wrong or when they don't work out in this country. One of the most common present day slang is only in naija which is usually said with irritation, exasperation, accompanied with a roll of the eye. For those who have the opportunity, they simply hop into the next flight out of the country, leaving the insanity , chaos, and injustice of this nation behind.
But what amazes me though, is that majority of these people still come back to the chaos, the filth, the confusion, the epileptic power supply, nonexistent road networks, and the eroded medical and academic system. My question is why? I mean since everything is so rosy and everything works so well over there, why come back to put up with all of these again?
The truth is that majority of the Nigerian people can exist in a cohesive, well thought out societies for only short periods of time. Before they begin to huff and get offended, think about it. Is the typical Nigerian truly ready to exist in a society that observes all protocols (for good reason) as opposed to a place where you can cut through the red tape and get things done in a short shake for a fee or if you're connected, a simple phone call will do the trick. Where else can you blatantly drive against traffic, jump an ATM queue or any other queue, or the power supply without paying your equity bills or get salaries without paying taxes? Are we ready to live in a town , where the volume of our TV set, if too loud can attract a visit from the Police. Our male traders (and some men, who are not traders, but don't know better - like the one I saw yesterday, who spurred this write up) who indiscriminately touch e very woman that passes by, as an intricate part of their sales pitch, would they comprehend a place where such actions could attract a jail term? What about per students? Are they all ready to take time and get the academic work domes, when they can just buy the degree or even without a degree, become the President of the nation? Will our lecturers survive a setting where a student has to be graded only on academic performance and not bedroom performances or monetary exchange.
Most Nigerians will tell you that it is the order and sanity that exists in these countries (developed countries) that draws them, and each time they return, they whine about how dreadful things are at hone. Again I ask, why did you return? Let me give you an answer.
You returned because, this is the one place madness thrives, things work better abroad, why is that? You can argue that their government have set up their structures, but the people, they governed do their bits. So my point is , if we truly want to live in a civilized structured society, let us begin to behave civilized people and have a bit more respect for ourselves and all things Nigerian, unlike this man from yesterday, who indiscriminately touched a lady and still was shouting at her, when this lady gave a fuss about it, he refused to apologize and he even created a big scene for doing something that would have warranted a jail term.
Indeed we need to have more respect for each other, it's an era of change, the new generations of Nigerians gives a lot of refreshing hope for a better future, but we must duly not that this change won't happen except we the people begin to change from inside out.
