Crohn's Disease Update: Foods I Have To Avoid

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

I've been diagnosed with Crohn's disease for about 5 years officially, although I have had symptoms for about 7 or so. You would think in that time-frame I would know by now what foods to avoid. But alas, I do not.

Call it ignorance or just plain stubbornness, but I have a hard time cutting out foods I like from my diet. This week I have really focused on a few things that are on the chopping block however, as they are really doing harm to my body. Don't worry, I will keep the comments PG-rated.

1. Almonds: I hate having this on my list, because I LOVE almonds. They are the perfect snack form the office, after the gym or really anytime at all. Packed with calories and protein, they are a great way to quickly load up after a good gym session, but they are classified at "roughage" and create some serious discomfort the next day in the bathroom.

2. Salads: This one isn't as big in my life as almonds, but it's unfortunate nonetheless. Salads were a staple for a while when I was trying to lose weight. It was the perfect lunch and could easily be spiced up with some protein like chicken, egg-whites or nuts. But my stomach had a tough time digesting the leafs themselves, and it would show if you know what I mean. Looks like its soup instead of salads for me now.

Granola: Very similar to almonds, granola was the perfect snack and I especially loved it after the gym, with a banana or two and a protein shake. Much mike almonds though, the nature of this snack was too rough on my intestines and I would often see the result when I hit the bathroom. Maybe I could blend it up and see how that works, but I on't think the size of the granola clusters is the problem, I think it's just the granola itself.

My diagnosis is a part of me, and has been a roller coaster ever since. I was in the hospital in May and weighed 140 or so, now I'm at 190 and eating well (sort of) and exercising regularly. Life is funny and sometimes all you can do is hold on for the ride.

Stay tuned for more updates as they happen.

Have you tried betaine?
Worked wonders for me.

I have not, I've heard about it and know it's good for muscle mass, weight loss, and can help digestion. Never pursued it though. Will have to look into it!
