#5. The Power of One, And How It Can Change Your Life!

in life •  7 years ago

Today I want to talk about the importance of singularity.

The world we live in, might give an impression that you need to do more than one thing at a time.

Focus on more than one relationship.

Do more than one job or business.

Take more than one vacation.

It may appear that the quality of your life is defined by how much more you have, do, and be.

When I started out, I had the same impression.

I wanted to do everything, and be everywhere at the same time.

In fact, I tried doing it.

I was doing a full time job, and started a business.

I knew people who were in more than one relationship at the same time.

I know others, who took more than one vacation a year.

The end result?

I failed miserably in my business, and it even affected my health.

The people who were trying to manage multiple relationships, failed in all of them.

As to the ones taking multiple vacations a year, well, as soon as one was over, they were planning the next.

After observing this pattern, I realized, that may be the answer to one of life’s deepest question, of how one can feel fulfilled, doesn’t come through doing many things, and being at many places.

I started laser focusing on just one thing at a time.

I found that just doing one thing at a time, whether it is a task, a career, or a relationship, it brings tremendous fulfillment.

There is magic when you immerse yourself in something.

When you do something with all mind, body and spirit, you become one with it.

This oneness is magical.

In a way, I consider this to be the secret sauce of life.

One is powerful. And considering we live in a world of unlimited distraction, it is even more important that we make it a habit to focus on one thing only.

Attention deficit disorder, is an issue that a lot of people are facing.

Simply because technology like smartphones leads to unlimited amounts of distraction.

Turning it into a habit of being distracted all the time.

A couple of tips on exercising the power of one:

1. One task at a time: From now one, try focusing only on one task, and do not drift from it until you have brought it to completion.

For instance, if you’re reading a post on Steemit, then give it all your attention, don’t jump to upvote or comment without fully reading the post.

2. One person at a time: If someone is talking to you, give them ALL your attention. Avoid the temptation to be distracted by your phone etc.

You have no idea how much your relationships will improve, if you just did this one thing.

Cheers!

Your focus should certainly be on one thing in life it should be a step by step process rather than doing all the things at once this will certainly lead to failure.

@witnesslife - this is a great point. We all have many distractions - our phones, TV, music, that takes our minds off of living in the moment. We should put those things down and just focus on our family o whatever's truly important too us.

@wealth4good Thank you! Yes, it is so important to turn your focus away from things that don't really have real value. In one of the Ted talks a research was done on several hundred people, and the conclusion was, the happiest people were not those who were more successful materially, but those who enjoyed warm connections with their friends and family. It opened my eyes to the fact that we're indeed social beings. And connections are greatly important. Cheers!

I'll give you a short story about my life: 2 years ago i had 4 exams to do, i focused on the four of them and ended up only doing 1... the next year i went back and tryed to focus on just 1 at a time, i ended up doing the three exams i had left, why is this? This is because i focused all my attention on each one of them at a time, i didn't try to multitask!
Multitasking can be very helpfull, but only when the things you are trying to do aren't that complicated, when they are complicated we need to give our whole focus to that task.
As soon as my exams restart again i'm going to decrease my steemit activity by a lot and focus on my exams, because i know that if i don't give it my all and focus on each thing i won't bring it to completion!

Exactly. Yes, multi-tasking can be done for simpler activities. I usually stick to one thing at a time though. I have noticed that multitasking ends up taking more bandwidth than it should. For instance, when I am having a cup of tea, and get busy on the computer, I don't think I enjoy the tea at all. What's the point if some liquid went into my body and I did not even enjoy it. I am just practicing being present as much as I can. Thanks! Cheers!

One task at atime,,,,thats my take from here

@princluv Absolutely. 100% focus on one thing is better than 99% focus on 10 things. Cheers!

This is a practical and wise advice. This world demands us to do more. In the process of doing that we will lose ourselves. Multitasking is a necessity in most jobs and that affects our lives as well because we apply that kind of habit and then ingrained to our character.

What multitasking did to me is that I was stressed more than ever trying to meet a lot of deadlines all at once. I failed in most and that has an impact to my self-esteem. I do have issues with self-esteem and that made me look down on myself even more - loser.

Your advice of focusing at one task at a time has been tried and tested. I did that and it made a big impact both at work and myself.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Doing one thing at a time has served me well too. Cheers!
