I would like to start this article by a famous quote:

"Your own resolution to success is more important than any other one thing." by Abraham Lincoln

One of the best things you can do for yourself on your journey of self discovery is to work out what drives you. The first step is to identify your values as they provide the fuel for your motivation and the drive behind everything you do in life. If you value something you will always find the motivation and energy to do it. If you don't value something, you will always struggle to find the motivation and energy to do it.

Values -

What matters to you is what your values are. They are the overarching ideas that serve as a foundation for your character and serve as a guide for your life decisions. Your time management is also influenced by your ideals. For instance, if your health is your most important value, you would spend your time significantly differently than someone whose profession or family is their top priority.

You are motivated by your values as well. If a course of action doesn't relate to something you value at least somewhat, you won't pursue it. By identifying your values, you may increase your drive, establish realistic objectives, and spend time on the things that matter to you.

How Your Values Are Formed -

Your family, friends, religion, school, teachers, your nation, and the media are just a few of the places where your values originate from. Significant emotional occurrences like natural catastrophes, emotional abuse, war, or worldwide sadness can shape them at any point in your life.

As you develop and change, your values alter. When your values change, some of your beliefs and the way you conduct your life will also shift.

Motivation -

Your motivation is driven by your ideals. You will be motivated to assist you accomplish your objectives if you establish them in line with your beliefs. Setting objectives that do not reflect your beliefs will make it difficult for you to attain them.

'Away From' Motivation -

'Away from' motivation is driven by pain. Pain motivated performance is not pleasant, produces inconsistent results and disappears when the pain is no longer present.

However, "away from motivation" provides you with a powerful initial drive to get away from the item you don't want in your life. Using this kind of motivation has the drawback of making you wait until something goes wrong before acting to remedy it. You don't tend to produce results since you don't have a target or objective that you are striving for—just something you are trying to escape from.

'Towards' Motivation -

If you use 'towards motivation' you will take action to move towards your goal and you will achieve them more often than not.

The most effective approach to encourage yourself is "toward" motivation. When you are driven to get what you want, you usually maintain that motivation until you succeed (provided you desire it enough).

When you are driven to get what you desire, you consistently establish and accomplish goals, pushing yourself further each time. You greatly increase your chances of attaining your goals in life by applying motivation toward them.

If you understand your values, you will understand what motivates you and why. If you discover whether you are using towards or away from motivation in different areas of your life, you will have answers for why some parts of your life are successful and others are not.
