A good question and the answer is for everyone different. Some want a house, a car, fancy clothes and if they have more money they simply want more stuff. This is ok if you love to work and don't get stress from managing all that stuff. If you don't you need to manage your desires and change your mindset.
Break the vicious cycle of buying more stuff when you earn more money!

YOLO (you only life once)

What is a successful life is hard to answer. If there is an answer than the best experts are people that lived life. Old wise men! Wise men never said and the end of their life that they should have bought more clothes, fitness equipment or fast cars. They also never say they should have worked harder at their career or worked more for a bigger salary.
All the tips they give are about:

  • free time
  • love
  • confidence
  • taking risks
  • don't delay dreams
  • live stress free
  • eat healthy
  • learn
  • enjoy your work

Break the vicious cycle

You have a life and you've got dreams. You need a place to stay and you need food. So in our society you need money. The target is change the ratio between earning money and spending it. This will result in more free time or investment opportunities in your dreams. The best way I found is minimalism and being eco-friendly. Spending money is often bad for the environment. Many Americans and Europenas are the biggest consumers in the world having a carbon footprint many times bigger than the rest of the world. You don't need a new car, new clothes, new phones or a daily Starbucks coffee. Many people can save hundreds of euros a month. This can result in working part-time or early retirement at the end of the line!

How to safe and be eco-friendly!

  • A electric bike, scooter or live simply close to work. Working one day at home can also save considerable amounts of money and time.
  • Less tropical food, less meat especially beef, less packaged foods and simply eat less.
  • Less holidays, but do more local stuff. If you travel than go for a longer time. Better one long holiday far away than two.
  • Live smaller
  • Pay off all debt start with credit-card debt. This is often the highest interested debt. Don't think it's normal to have debt.
  • Kids costs allot of money. It's better to raise 1 or 2 kids great than being a stressed out parent with 4!
  • Pets costs time and money. Especially dogs can cost allot of time. A Jack-Russel or Husky easily needs a hour of running per day to release there energy. Share the dog with your neighbors or grandparents in busy times.
  • Thrift-shops and garage sales often have quality stuff for sale. Only buy quality if you don't like it you can sell it again. Low quality items often end up in the dump, costing much more in the end.
  • You don't need the best material to sport. First become fit. In the Netherlands I often saw big fat guys riding a super expensive racebike of 7kg's. They could have bought a 200 euro bike of 12kg and lose 5kilos.
  • Spend your money on investments or stuff that doesn't lose value. Oldtimers, quality tools, property and solar panels.

Thanks for reading and spend your time wisely. You've got less time in life than you think!
