Panmure Island Lighthouse

The lighthouse nearest my home on Prince Edward Island (PEI) is on Panmure Island. Panmure is connected to PEI by a causeway. Since the lighthouses have been decommissioned, communities have banded together to save them. Panmure recently had a new coat of red and white paint.

Panmure lighthouse was built in 1853 and is the oldest wooden one on PEI.

In the summertime, many tourists stop by to check out the lighthouse and it’s gift shop.

One day while visiting the lighhouse, I saw a small bus pull into the lower parking lot with ’Phat Head’ painted across the top. A young couple jumped out and asked me some questions about the lighthouse. They had travelled from British Columbia all the way across Canada using their Phathead for travelling and sleeping. Panmure Island Lighthouse had been on their bucket List.

There are still farms near the vicinity of the lighthouse.

On the sunny afternoon I was there the above three Clydesdales were standing as close as possible to the fence and staring at everyone who went pass. No doubt someone had been giving them treats and they were waiting to see if someone had an apple or carrot.

This horse has a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean near the Panmure Lighthouse when he is let out to pasture. It doesn’t look like much of a fence but the steep incline to the water would keep him from roaming.

Panmure Beach is a hidden treasure. In the hotter weather the beach is enjoyed by all those who know of it’s beauty. Many locals bring their family and spent hours walking the red sands, searching for sea glass , enjoying the water and just breathing the wonderful fresh air.

On a warm evening it is nice to stop and have an ice cream or a beer at the canteen, located in the park, before reaching the lighthouse
