Wood Islands Lighthouse

The historic white shingled lighthouse was built in 1876 and is the oldest on PEI with attached dwelling for the lighthouse keeper and his family.

Situated in the community of Wood Islands, the lighthouse is open to visitors about 5 mos of the year and contains a museum with books, sea glass and nautical artifacts. Because of shoreline erosion it was moved back 70 meters from the edge of the cliff in 2009. It was moved in winter when the ground was solid.

From Wood Islands, a ferry will take one across the Northumberland Strait to Caribou, Nova Scotia. It takes about 75 minutes. This is one of the smaller ferries my sister took to return to Nova Scotia after a visit with me.

This is where one waits to drive on the ferry. Walk-on passengers wait nearer the terminal.

Taking a last look at Wood Islands from the Holiday Island Ferry. My sister is on the lower deck in this one. She walked on and left her car on the Nova Scotia side. It is much cheaper to walk-on as long as someone can pick you up in Wood Islands.
