Light the World Day 5: Honor thy father and mother.

in lighttheworld •  7 years ago

Today's #lighttheworld theme involves showing love and appreciation for one's parents.

The official ligththeworld site advises:

"We shouldn’t wait for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day to express our love to our parents. We can show appreciation year-round by serving them and living the way they taught us to live."

Like every athlete who has ever scored a touchdown, a goal or hit a home run, I am going to focus my appreciation on my mom (sorry Dad... you know I love you).

That last part really hit home for me. Although she is not perfect, my mom has always been an incredibly kind, loving and generous person. She "taught me how to live" through her actions every day of my childhood. Although I am not very religious, my mother is. One of my favorite lessons she ever taught me was how to observe the Christian season of Lent.

Lent is the time leading up to Easter. In my neighborhood, it was traditional for people to "give something up" for Lent. The idea was to make a sacrifice during this time to represent Jesus's resisting temptation in the desert. Even though I was at a public school, many kids would talk about giving up candy, soda, or swearing for Lent. Apparently giving up homework did not count (I tried).

One day while we were at the grocery store, I asked my mom what she was giving up for Lent. She responded, "Oh I don't give up anything. I like to do a good deed every day instead."

"You can do that?", I asked.

She smiled and responded, "Of course you can. It's nice and it means more to me".

Although it is common for people to do this, it was very unique in our social circles. Her own family did not do this. No one at Church did it. In fact, I didn't even know this was an option. To tell you the truth, I don't think she knew it was an option either. It just felt right to her... so she did it.

The-time-is-always-right-to-do-what-is-right..jpg

I learned two of the most valuable lessons of my life during our trip to Jewel that day.

  1. Do good deeds.
  2. If you have a choice between following the rules or following your heart... follow your heart.

I am not perfect either. However, I try to live those lessons every day. Even though I don't always succeed, it is not because my mom did not teach me or role model for me.

Today I am going to honor my mom by telling my kids that story about her. Then I am going to give her a call and tell her what I taught my kids.

The #lighttheworld website provides some suggestions for honoring your mother and father:

  • When was the last time you actually talked to your parents?
Give them a call (don’t just send a text) and tell them how much you love them.

  • How well do you know your family’s history?
Learn about an ancestor, and share his or her story. FamilySearch can help you get started. (Visit FamilySearch.org.)

  • Need some meaningful advice about something you’re dealing with?
Ask your parents; you may be surprised by their wisdom.

I am very lucky that my Mom and Step-father are still alive so that I can express my appreciation for them. Not everyone is so lucky. Others may have biological parents who did not show the love they deserved. But that does not mean they cannot participate in this special day.

  • If your parents have passed away, perhaps you can honor them by telling someone about a lesson your parents taught you or a kind deed they did.

  • Perhaps you can honor a parental figure who has made an impact in your life.

  • Maybe you can be that parental figure for a child who does not have one.

Several community members have already followed @gavvet's lead and have created #lighttheworld posts of their own. Now we need someone from the community to inspire others on day 6. Tomorrow's theme is: "Judge not, that ye be not judged." You can find more information here.

@gavvet and I will be consulting with Day 3's winner @methusalem to choose a post that is especially creative and inspiring. @gavvet and I will reward that post with a significant up-vote. Then that person can help choose the "winner" for day 9.

If you decide to participate by creating your own post for day 6, please make sure to use the #lighttheworld tag and include the day's video, theme and link, as we have done.

If you'd like to see a great example, please check out @methusalem's inspirational Day 3 post https://steemit.com/lighttheworld/@methusalem/freely-ye-have-received-freely-give.

Although we will be on the lookout for great #lighttheworld posts every day, we will definitely need contributions on days 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24.

My Daughter MJ asked that I include this picture that she drew. She explained, "Mommy taught me how to tuck someone into bed and to make them feel safe at night. So I am going to do that for mommy some day."

Its fantastic to see such a wonderful post. I trully overwhelmed by the sincete thought of respecting our parents. Being myself in parenting stage...i can imagine how much pain our parents hv taken to mk us grow. Today there are many facilities..but in their time they have managed everything in whatever they had at that tym. ...i trullly whole heartidly salutes not only my parents but to the whole parenthood. They deserve all the respect.👍....with a bow....salut!

Congrats on parenthood! I am not a parent myself, but I have seen all my siblings become parents and seeing how much sacrifice it takes as an adult has given me so much respect for my parents.

Love and respect, should be part of our everyday life.

INDEED,,, I am away of my home almost 7 mounths now,,, and nobody can imagine how much I miss my parents, Especially my mom... I know that she misses me more than I do,,, Your article is really a big push forward to people in order to try to Establish contact with their parents, if anybody still have his parents alive, Give them all the love and attention they deserve, because once they are died I swear you will just wish that they are alive and you will be ready to pay all what have just to kiss the forehead of your Mom and dad..
Respect for you all.

We don't need special occasions to remember our parents. We should be honouring them every day in everything we do.

I agree 100%

i love my parents....😎😎
I respect my parents....😎😎
and you.....?

Of course!

thnx for your reply......

It's interesting. I live in Jerusalem right on the edge of the Judean Desert (מדבר יהודה in Hebrew). During the Jewish Sabbath we have a ton of prayers (usually that deal with the hardships of living in the desert). These songs are not so much about giving something up as they represent the "Spiritual Desert" one finds himself in and how to repent to get God's forgiveness. Very interesting.

Thank you for sharing! I love to hear perspectives from different religions. People need to realize how much they all have in common. One of the reasons I am participating in this is to show that a person does not need to be a practicing Christian in order to take part in these universally Good deeds.

Great. Than I share with pleasure.

"The depth of the love of parents for their children cannot be measured. It is like no other relationship. It exceeds concern for life itself. The love of a parent for a child is continuous and transcends heartbreak and disappointment." ---James E. Faust
Fathers day/Mothers day these are only for show up for single day. but we should be love our parents 365 days. thanks for share the very nice & learning post.

We only realise how much we miss them and how much we owe them, when they are not there anyomore. I dreamt about my father the other night. I am an old lady but in this dream I was a child again, he held me and told me how much he loved me. That was so nice I did not want to wake up.

yes, we should love and take care our parents. As they take care us during our childhood. thanks, #lighttheworl and also thanks @hanshotfirst for such a great writing.

Mothers are special. I really don't know how it was done or who designed it, you'll hardly see a mother give up on her child.

I met my dad for the first time at the age of 12. My mom didn't have much, but she said I'd rather starve than give up on you.

There is a special love installed in mothers

That is beautiful! I hope you are able to tell your mom what you just wrote here.

Sure, I will. This Christmas

Hits right in the feels! I've got the day off work tomorrow so will spend more time with Mum! And dad too of course 😂😝

That's beautiful! I bet they will love it.

"We shouldn’t wait for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day to express our love to our parents. We can show appreciation year-round by serving them and living the way they taught us to live."

Absolutely right, our parents are the most precious gift from God for us, as we are for them. We should be thankful for having them every moment of our lives - and express that gratitude in every possible moment. Thank you for the heartwarming post :) Allah Bless you

And thank you for the beautiful response! I really enjoy this initiative because it is filled with such universally good ideas.

you are most welcome. and let's hope this make this world a better place - be that even a little bit :)

This is what I needed to see and read this morning! Thanks for the reminder of what this whole thing is about--family.

The great book says honour your father and your mother so your day shall be long. We should always show love to our parents no matter what time of the year is. I miss mine and wish they are still alive for me to show them how much I love them. No matter how hard you think your parents are to you, one thing is sure you can't change your parents. Show love to your parents when they are alive and not wishing you did when they are dead.

I am loving this movement :) Here is my link to day 6 :) I wrote day 5 on my day 5 as well, without taking other timezones into account! Lol, it's still Day 5 for a couple hours here ;)

LOL. I understand completely. Gavvet and I are on completely opposite schedules.

LOVE AND RESPECT!
The only thing we can give back to our Mama or to our Parents. The only thing the satisfied their hardships and sacrifices. They don't need anything but those two.

As a Father now, I've realize how hard it is to be a Parent. I saw it too on my wife. As my daughter will have her Birthday this coming Dec 26. I always pray that how we nurtured her respond what she will become when she grow up.

Thanks for sharing!

Like other people, I have only just joined steemit. However, I am highly encouraged by this post. I am a journalism major in college right now, and was looking for 1. A way to spread the gospel, 2. A way to start a blog or other ways to post my work, to start a journalism career, and 3. Make money doing both.

I would like to participate in creating more faith based blog posts.

There is also an initiative called @steemnewsonline that is trying to increase news posts on the platform. You should check them out.

Thanks for the information @hanshotfirst . The @steamnewsonline hyperlink didn't work this time, but I'll look into it.

Dear Mama, I love you more than any things in this world..... Even though you are out of this world for about 4years and half..... You are irreplaceable and I know that you are in the sky above watching ovee US!!!!! Remain at the bossom of God your creator.

That is beautiful.

Love your mother and your father while they're with you. You will never know the emptiness when they're gone.
12"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

Thank you for sharing this @hanshotfirst ! Resteemed.

Beautiful post friend in the teaches that we should consider our parents very much for the sacrifices they make for us every day is great to see this kind of post greetings friend ^^

I agree with what you have said.
Also don't forget to be a parent. Do not require if you don't give. Your kid will probably learn most of behavior from you. If you are not a role model, your kid will have strugle to become one. It is not only a gift, but it is a great responsibility to raise a child.

In honor of all the mothers out there who sacrificed selflessly for their children. And in honor of all the mothers who were not fortunate to have a husband by there side. This is a thank you to you. WE LOVE YOU!

LOL LOL LOL LOL

Great comedic timing on this one. And SO true. It's so much easier to remember all the good times when you aren't under the same roof.

Mother love always true @hanshotfirst

Posts like this just keep hitting a nerve....i struggled(and still struggle) with a profound hate for my biological father. The only memories i have of him was how we were always scared once he was around. Your post is one i have bookmarked in order to read more on

Thank you for this post

A very great lesson learnt-do good

When we talk about tenderness and love, we mean the mother, and when we talk about safety and giving, we mean the father, they are one of the greatest blessings that God has on us in this world. If they were not here we would not have been cared for and sacrificed for what we are now. This is why we present to you in this article the most beautiful words about the parents who, whatever we say, and whatever we write about them, will not fulfill their right to us:

  • The father can be abandoned even if he is a judge, and the mother can not be abandoned even if she is begging.
  • To my father, O my beloved, my heart, my mind, and all my companions. May Allah reward you with good, health, health and pleasure.
  • She is the mother .. Whatever you do and even if your injustice .. is your mother.
  • Mother is the one who teaches us the meaning of giving and good without waiting for the return only to the originality of the soul and love.

Hi friend, very beautiful post you had posted. You are lucky enough that your mom and your step dad are alive still now. I am not from Christian community, I am a Hindu women, want to share with you friends, as I am a single mom of two kids and have no other relatives except my two kids. Please guide how are the rules, and what is the theme of today. I want to share with you about my beloved father and mother and about their loved. Thanks for the nice post, wish you a very beautiful time ahead.

That was so beautiful @hanshotfirst ! I miss my mom every day ... May she rest in peace ... upped and resteemed🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕

For teen, young adult or people who's not yet a parents like us. They don't understand all this. They will only understand a mother/fathers love when theyre about to become a parent.

I say we should always tell them or atleast show them how much they mean to us, how blessed we are to have them. Family is there forever

Fantastic post salute u @hanshotfirst
