Scrooged: A Lesson for Day 20 of The Light The World Initiative .

in lighttheworld •  7 years ago

I swear I didn't get involved in #lighttheworld in order to have an excuse to write about, Stranger Things, Harry Potter, and Wayne's World. I did it because I truly believe in the message behind it: be kind to others.

And yet, here I am again using another movie to help introduce today's theme.

If you have never seen Scrooged, it is a must see. It is one of my favorite Bill Murray movies (and there are many to choose from).

Scrooged is a modern take on Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol (well modern for 1988... hence the appearance of the Solid Gold Dancers).

Instead of centering on Ebenezer Scrooge the money lender, Bill Murray plays Frank Cross a television executive. The characters share that classic Scrooge-like trait: unquenchable greed. Both are taught a valuable lesson by three visiting ghosts. The only difference is that Frank Cross learns in hilarious ways.

Despite what Gordon Gekko says, most people know in their heart that greed is not good. It just took Scrooge and Cross most of their lives to figure that out.

Luckily, here on steemit, people already know the lesson being taught by today's #lighttheworld theme:

"A man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth."

Luke 12:15

How do I know that this community already knows this lesson?

Well there was that one time the entire community came together to make sure that a fellow steemian could receive a life saving medical treatment.

https://steemit.com/blog/@darthnava/fellow-steemers-i-need-help-as-my-mri-results-are-not-encouraging

But that was over seven months ago. That was a one time deal. Surely no one is using steem to help charities today while SBDs are so high. That would be crazy! People need to keep all of those SBDs for themselves so they can buy Moonpies, penny whistles and iPhone Xs.

Then I went to https://steemit.com/trending/charity and saw pages and pages of steemians running and donating to projects to help others. The amount of kindness to others I saw on those pages was staggering... and wonderful.

The official #lighttheworld website reminds us that:

"Sometimes possessions distract us from appreciating the most important things in life. By eliminating these distractions, we can lead a more fulfilling life."

It then suggests ways you can focus on the things that mean the most including:

  • What’s something you love but could live without?
Give something you cherish to someone who would appreciate it.

  • Who has made your life more meaningful?
Plan something to do with that person, and make a new treasured memory.

  • Are there distractions in your life that may stand in the way of your following Jesus Christ?
Give up something material during the holidays. Tell someone who will hold you accountable, and invite the person to join you in your goal.

I am going to add some just for us steemians:

  • Check out https://steemit.com/trending/charity and see if there is anything there that inspires you
  • Check out what our boy Terry at @surpassinggoogle is doing to help others and lend him a hand
  • Check out one of these projects that fellow steemians are spearheading

People here at steemit are empowered by steem because of the crazy money that can be made off here so they just think of many ways to help other people thanks to our STEEM and SBDs it also helps me with all my medical bills and maybe I might get a kidney transplant if I would have more chance @hanshotfirst
It was a long time since I saw that movie of Bill Murray, good story of humanity and we can learn from it to just be kind.

Hello strongest steemian. I truly hope you will be able to get that transplant some day. Keep posting my friend!

Me and my kids watch the christmas carol every year where Jim carrey was the voice of Ebenezer Scrooge. This movie teaches us not to hold on to material things/possessions but hold on to the people that love us,helping others who are in need, share our blessings to others. No man is an island. We need each other to survive. I hope my kids will remember the lesson as they grow older.

That is beautiful.

Quite possibly the best film for the season in my opinion!

I haven't seen scrooged in so long. Still lots of charity projects happening
on here!

I would love to watch this movie. You have just raised my mood like SBD.. Merry Christmas to everyone

Great post man, if all the Oligarchs would get their head out of their asses and understand this, the world would be 500% different... but we're not there yet, maybe another 100-1,000 years, who can say /// PEACE !!!

Maybe steem can accelerate that advancement.

Scrooged is such a great movie! The outrageousness of the beginning of that movie is priceless. Oh yeah, and the overall message of the movie is definitely one that implores you to straighten out your priorities and "be human". Which seemed to be a common theme in the late '80s and early '90s in Hollywood, unlike today, which the message is "Be a Superhero" =D

It's very important to remember when you're watching the movie that it was made in the '80s and you need to put yourself in that mindset to begin with. If you can't do that, you may not appreciate how great the movie was for its time.

Fun Fact: The leading woman in the movie also played Marion in 2 Indian Jones movies!

Also, Bobcat plays a great part in the movie! Ahh, I miss the quality and originality of 80s and 90s movies.. but.. that's off topic.. #lighttheworld!

It is a classic for sure! And you are 100% right about the message. I could have actually used this for the Harry Potter one I did. Great point!

This is my husband's favorite movie. I laugh only because he goes into hysterics....and can hardly breathe!! I don't find it that funny personally it's just okayish. I do like Bill Murray though in some movies like What About Bob.

Sometimes satire is best when watching others laugh....for me, that's the best!

What about bob may be the most underrated movie I know. I love that movie so much!

Me too!!....I have seen it so many times....I have it queued on the pvr - maybe I'll watch it tonight! Way better than a cheesy Christmas movie right now - I think I have cheese overload! I will have to watch Scrooged with my husband though.....fair is fair. :)

There is a line in Scrooged though that we all use in our family....Im not sure of the segment but he says "me, me, me also" when a list of behaviors is mentioned.

I have read the Christmas Carol novel but unfortunately could not finish it. I have to watch this movie for sure. Charles Dickens was a great author. I love his writings very much.

Oh man. You have to see this. Such a great take on the classic.

Richard Donner was superb in the Lethal Weapon series, but Scrooged was his masterpiece. No offense, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.

Great post. Things will not fill that emptiness inside only the things of a spiritual sense will. I am adding "Scrooged" to my list of movies to watch.

Greetings sir @hanshotfirst.

Greed obscures reasoning and hardens hearts. Money is so necessary because it serves as a means of satisfying basic needs such as food, clothing, health, education and recreation among others. However, when the love of money becomes an obsession, the human being gets lost in his labyrinth, because he wants more and more and more. While at the same time it moves away from the real things that give meaning to life. Money can never buy true love. Money can't buy a family, neither can real friends.

I was blessed to find here Terry Ajayi @surpassinggoogle, he is such a special person, he overflows love for everyone here, and always has an attitude that motivates us to believe in ourselves and give the best of ourselves.
In addition his work here at steemit is so dedicated, impeccable and generous.

Thank you for inspiring me and all the others to be a good person and to do something good for others! There are so many good things in this world and we should try our best to make the world a little bit better :)

one of the best films at the moment

I love the movie😍

I'm going to have to watch that movie now!

OMG... @hanshotfirst ...

For the first time, I wrote a letter To Santa to get stuff. I normally don't need anything because I agree with the quote you :

A man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

The human is abundant with the friends and family he / she have around. When we died it's surrounded by the loved ones. Not our possessions :)

Now, I feel a bit guilty.

I just discover the Project #lighttheworld will have a deeper look at it. I think I will leanr for that...

I love this movie! My girlfriend and I just watched it a few days ago!!

Merry Christmas!!

Simply great @hanshotfirst, it's such a fun and successful way, as you translate the teachings you go to the specific point to reach the readers, it's a delight to read what you write!

Good post! Nice pictures. Thanks for sharing. I follow and upvote you. Pls. Do same for me.

give me an invitation and we'll see what happens.... lol .... enjoyable moments ,, happy christmas

Scrooged is easily my favorite Christmas Movie. This is Bill Murray's finest hour. I watched the old one starring Alistar Sim. I liked that one because it kept Christianity as a relevant plot point. The ghosts were there to fill Scrooge with the Christ's light. I never read the book but I suspect the book would have that plot point as well.
