Do you eat your potato chips with chopsticks? Evidently the younger generation in Japan does, much to the chagrin of the older generation.
[M]any of the younger entertainers on the variety show panel agreed with the convenience store staff, they said it’s normal to eat potato chips with chopsticks.
Older guests on the show were stunned. Unable to hide their surprise they shouted out, 'I can't understand this at all!', causing a chaotic scene on the programme.
To be fair, they have good reasons.
One of the young guests explained that when gaming and eating chips at the same time, the controller or smartphone screen will get sticky and dirty.
I quickly took to chopsticks when I came to Japan and these days I use them for just about everything. They are convenient! But I can't say I've ever thought to use them for eating potato chips.

haha which side of the argument is that coming from? I dunno, I am just going off the article I link to. I haven't seen anyone using chopsticks to eat potato chips. But maybe I don't hang out with enough young people.

Forks are too hard to clean. Chopsticks easier. I am all about making dishes easier to clean, esp in a country where dishwashers are uncommon. It does sound like a good idea, doesn't it? Next time I buy some chips I am going to try too!

It certainly is a good chopstick training! I can imagine you need to be skilled to not let them twist and fall or break the chips because of too much force.
But still... I would just not touch any touchscreen when eating O.o The phone junkies...

That's true—good training. Then again, good training for us barbarians; the Japanese themselves get enough pebble and marble moving training in elementary school to all be experts on chopsticks before long.

I used to live with Asian people, so learned how to use chopsticks well by watching them. (Though I remember trying to copy the instructions at the first Chinese restaurant I went to back in grade school.)

It does seem easier than keeping a napkin around for wiping off the oil after eating. Or a pants leg, as I see many guys do. I am going to keep a watch for it now and see if I can't catch someone using chopsticks for chips and take their photo.
