BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Rizwana Adedamola hails from Osun stae Nigeria, born on the 1st of august, 1994. Her writings cut across different genres of literature. She explores diverse themes in her works.

Through her works, she hopes to contribute to the feminist movements which seek female emancipation from the claws of oppression.
In her Poem “FGM” (Female Genitak Mutilation) Rizwana Adedamola
portrays a situation where the female figure becomes sexually alienated through a process called Female Genital Mutilation.

First let us take a look into the propect of Alienation. Alienation refers to a situation in which one feels at a loss, one cannot relate with something. It includes the ideas of someone being strange and Isolated.

According to the oxford learner dictionary, it says “To cause to feel less close, to remove from an accustomed place or set of associations.

The research aims to take the study beyond alienation as a result of Female Genital Mutilation. It aims to look into other similar situation like rape, psychological manipulation in the bedroom all resulting into alienation of the Female gender.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This research will use the tenets of Feminism and Colonialism theories as a study guide for
this research.

While using Feminism, it will concern itself with the representation of the female dilemma and
Oppression.

Feminism as a movement seeks to represent the oppression the woman faces,
represent this oppression thereby striking a feeling of awareness or consciousness which in turn will bring about emancipation and empowerment and also seeking ways in which this emancipation can manifest.

While using the Post-colonial theory, this research will make use of the Self/other relationship as propounded by Frantz Fanon.

According to post colonialist theories, the colonizer is the self while the colonized is the other.

According to these theories, the “Other” is the second, existing and yet non existent, lacks an
Identity, has no will or power of it’s own. The other does not belong, is inappropriate and subservient etc.

Hence, this research will look into the ways in which the female gender has been characterized into the position of the other.

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

The female gender has been defined over time as being relegated to the position of a cook and sexmate. This definition seems to be changing over time yet a new form of oppression seems to be rising; psychological oppression and sexual oppression which results into alienation.

Women are often categorized as the “other” because of the oppression and exploitation they go through in the society and in the homes.

A lot of issues have been raised about Rape and the complexities of Sex when it comes to love making between a man and a woman.

However, this issues haven’t been applied into Rizwana’s “FGM”.

Also, not much has been said on Sexual alienation unlike Sexual oppression. Hence, the research aims to add to existing knowledge on the issue of sexual alienation.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  • How does the female gender suffers sexual alienation?
  • How does oppression obtain in the bedroom?
  • In what ways does the female gender fits into the prospects of the “other”
-What are the ways in which this research can empower the readers?
AIM OF THE STUDY

  • To broaden issues on sexual encounters
  • To draw the line between sexual oppression and pleasure
  • To look into the complexities of sex
  • To analyse the psychological and emotional effect of sex on the female gender

The Concluding part will look into the issues raised above.

Female genital mutilation is wickedness to me. I think everyone still doing it should be arrested. I wonder what those guys think while doing it. They claim its tradition? To hell with their traditions.
A woman is also human. I wonder why they are being treated as less important.
I hope this gets a solution soon. I hope there will be more voices speaking up until it echoes in their head that threatens they are doing is wrong.
