Disruptive Technology - Will Steemit be next?

in live •  8 years ago  (edited)

Just like Uber has revolutionized the taxi industry and AirBnB is disrupting the Bed & Breakfast industry, Steemit has strong potential in disrupting the Social Media industry.

Both these technologies are app-based disruptive technologies. I do not think that Uber requires any introduction and that most of us has used this technology either when we had an emergency, just using it to get to the airport to save on Parking fees, or we are more frequent users and use it as a main means of transport. It has the potential of actually making us less reliant on owning vehicles ourselves. In some countries more than others.

The key here are that the community trust the service provider

AirBnB has already taken the hospitality industry by storm and is a community that is trusted, where people can list and end users can book accommodation around the world. It all started in August 2008, and by two entrepreneurs, who got not afford their loft in San Francisco, and rented out and Air mattress and provided the guests a homemade breakfast.

Again the key here are is that the community trust the service provider.

Uber is now the largest taxi provider in the world, without owning any taxis and AirBnB is now the largest provider of accommodation, without owning 1 room, flat or hotel. They are taking out the middle man that we all got used to through time and are coining it with their direct-to-customer. Now that is what I call disruptive!!

In both the examples above the service providers won the trust of people over, by finding a business model, that works for all parties involved.

In Ubers case: The** owner** of the property wants to earn money by using his vehicle, the service provider Uber makes money by supporting and maintaining the platform and the customer has a need to travel and get somewhere

In AirBnB's case : The owner of the property wants to earn money with his property, the service provider AirBnB makes money of the platform and the customer has a need for accommodation.

Trust does not scale well!

Robert Number a well-known, Evolutionary Anthropologist, has a theory, which makes a lot of sense to me. He believes that as we move away from our closest people( our family), then friends, etc. you will need to put things in place to govern the relationship. This includes, signed contracts, law, regulation and institutions in order to have trust among people.

As Steemit is evolving and more and more users joins the platform, and I have to say, a very interesting and well thought out platform, this is what the creators and developers need to take into consideration. This platform has massive potential! The users of the system already trust the platform and it was obviously built on a blockchain .

If we look at the both UBER and AirBnB, we also have a three legged stool here.

The Uber Triangle

The steemit triangle

In steemits case: We have the owner of the content who wants to be rewarded, the service provider who are rewarded for providing and maintaining the platform and we have the customer who wants to read good content in articles, stories, latest news etc. The customer is also the content provider, which wants to be rewarded.

In both the Uber and AirBnB cases it took a few years to hit the sweet spot and turned mainstream. What they had on their side, was that people always needs transport and accommodation. All three parties evenly have a requirement for something and they are rewarded for it.

In Steemit's case we have a the same scenario where all the parties are rewarded for their value…

Let's look at the current trend of posts being created a day. There are thousands of posts created in a day. They all follow the same path. Into a deep black hole. The only way for it to be pulled out of the hole, is by some luck a whale will vote for it. When the second whale vote for it, other whales start looking at it, but by now it is already moving up the Trending list, maybe around page 10 of trending list. When the third whale votes, the piranah's come, and if you do not vote for it early enough, you do not even get decent curator awards.

The reward structure is however still in its infancy, which requires a small group of people (the whales) to upvote posts out of the whole. As more and more Dolphins are created, the chance of a post being pulled out of the deep black hole will increase exponentially. I still enjoy @timd 's post Why Steemit Dolphins Will Become More Important Than Whales and his explanation.

My honest opinion is that Steemit has massive potential and may become the next disruptive technology that will make a difference in all our lives, just as Uber and AirBnB did. More whales will be made through time who will in turn create more dolphins.. This can be seen in @liberosist post Steemit is becoming more democratic, diverse and equal!

Quality post! I think Steemit has possibility to be the next big thing. Basic idea in Steemit is so awesome. Steemit will lure regular people to write content in a hope of getting some easy money. At the same it will represent cryptocurrencies to regular people. Which is great!

I believe when community and developers work together then Steemit will rise. I guess that in one year Steemit will have 1,000,000 people from all over the World.

Thats exactly the point: Steemit could become the biggest pr campaign for the use of cryptocurrencies. And it provides a perfect book case for the usage of app coins.

@vorsseli, I still wanted to mention it in the post as well. You are 100% correct. In my books this is the closest that cryptocurrencies has been to becoming a household name. This is the beginning of something big. Also agree that if the community and develpors work together Steemit will rise. The only problem that needs to be sorted out quickly is the deep black hole of content, and creating more people with the ability to pull it out. I am sure many more people will be happy of we have 500 posts generating revenue of $500 each instead of 25 posts generating $10 000 + each because it is on the trending page
