Most people use the word "happiness" to describe a range of positive emotions, including joy, pride, contentment and gratitude. Many researchers use "happiness" as synonymous with "subjective well-being", they measure asking people to report how they feel satisfied with their lives and how much positive and negative emotion are experiencing

The answers comes from the science of happiness, Positive psychology, the scientific study of the forces and virtues that allow individuals, organizations and communities reach their full development", with the support of other sciences.

Since classical antiquity happiness has been the subject of debates and philosophical and religious investigations. fundamental names of Philosophy and Psychology is dedicated to the research of happiness and positive emotions, but the great contribution of Positive Psychology was not to have invented the study of happiness but having it developed on a scientific basis.

Martin Seligman, professor at the University of Pennsylvania and psychologist, principal founder of this science, began to investigate how people achieve a happier life with more satisfaction and meaning. He began to focus on identifying and building of human strength, happiness, good functioning and excellence.

Starting from the idea of happiness of Aristotle, the Positive Psychology believes in happiness as a result of a virtuous life. From this principle, the researchers studied several codes of conduct of eastern culture and western looking virtues common to all of them. They arrived, so the six virtues, which are wisdom, courage, love, justice, moderation and transcendence.

Then came the characteristics that a human being should have to conquer these virtues, which called personal strengths, which are gratitude; bravery and value; fairness and equity; humor, and joy; leadership; forgiveness, kindness and generosity; citizenship and teamwork; enthusiasm and energy; creativity and originality; curiosity; spirituality and sense of purpose; appreciation of beauty and excellence; ability to love and be loved; modesty and humility; hope and optimism; love of knowledge; social intelligence; integrity; honesty and authenticity; perspective and wisdom; prudence and caution; judgment and critical thinking; diligence and perseverance and self-control and self-regulation.

So Positive Psychology began to develop techniques, exercise, positive interventions to increase happiness, grouped in three ways: 1. pleasant life: seek positive emotional state, experiencing maximum positive emotions and minimizing, avoiding unnecessary negative emotions. 2. engaged life: seek positive mental state, the flow-concept developed by co-founder of Positive Psychology, psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi-, the state of consciousness flow, concentration and satisfaction in what you do . 3. significant life: to serve a cause, have a purpose beyond you and leave a legacy.

The happiness in general, involves the experience of positive emotions. Barbara Fredrickson, a professor at the University of North Carolina, is a specialist in the study of positive emotions and developed a theory about the beneficial effect of positive emotions, known as 'broaden-and-build theory', where the positive emotions are an expression of health and sanity, allow a flowering or expansion (broaden) cognitive and behavioral therapy and also provide the construction (build) of resources psychological and emotional.

Negative emotions such as fear, anger and disgust lead to behaviors focused on avoiding or addressing threats, while positive emotions such as joy, happiness, satisfaction, enjoyment, gratitude and love, increase flexibility and range of cognition and behavior. Thus, the ideal ratio of positive and negative emotions is 75% (seventy five percent) of positive emotions and 25% (twenty five percent) of negative emotions.

Scientific research suggests, therefore, that happiness is a combination of how you are satisfied with your life and how good you feel in your day to day; what makes human beings prosper, thoughts, actions and behaviors make it more productive at work, happier in relationships and more accomplished at the end of the day.

You can not change your genes, but you can change yourself, you can train to become happier. The types of positive interventions and exercises to promote positive emotional qualities such as kindness and attention, suggest that these qualities can be the product of skills you learn through training, as well as develop your skills training music or a sport. Over time you can build enduring habits that increase resilience to improve your happiness levels.

In other words, you have the ability to control the way you feel, and with constant practice, can form habits to a more satisfying and fulfilling life.
