Age-graded personality is associated with higher levels of fulfillment of certain social needs. Increasing research on life satisfaction has shown that people who consider their lives to be fulfilling report higher levels of life satisfaction. These factors may include making a difference in the world, leaving something valuable behind, or doing something with one's life that matters. Researchers studied life satisfaction and quality of life in two different samples, asking participants to rate concepts such as making a difference, being honest, and being true to oneself. One group of participants reported feeling most fulfilled when they were doing what they were passionate about, while another group reported experiencing a sense of calling.

The most important factor for young adults, according to those who are reflective, is giving back. While training for a marathon might be fulfilling for some, it may not be fulfilling for others. On the other hand, ballet class is a fulfilling activity for some. If you don't feel fulfilled by what you're doing, change something about your life. You might be surprised at how much change is necessary to make your life more fulfilling.

Among people in advanced economies, family is a major source of meaning. People in 14 countries highlight family relationships, pride in their relatives, and a desire to leave a better world for their descendants. In the U.S., Italy, and the United Kingdom, half or more of people say family makes life more fulfilling. Despite these general trends, they vary by country. In Taiwan, the opposite holds true.

Work also contributes to the sense of personal fulfillment during middle adulthood. However, many adults experience personal distress associated with their work. While this is not surprising, it is nevertheless important to recognize that men and women are both affected by the stress that comes with working for longer hours. Nonetheless, work is an important factor in personal fulfillment, and working longer hours is likely to increase one's status. Therefore, despite the high stress levels, men and women experience lower self-esteem.

By identifying what makes you feel fulfilled, you can start working towards achieving those goals.
