Living Off The Grid Journal part 4 - A New Structure

in livingoffthegrid •  8 years ago  (edited)

Hello Steemian friends!

I'm back with another update on the homestead as it starts to take shape. We are still sleeping in the RVs but getting our home together in the meantime. Major appliances have yet to be delivered and we ordered new ones since we are going 100% solar we wanted the best efficiency we could afford. The standby generator is also on order and won't be here till August, which is a major thing. I have, for the sake of protecting my batteries, been turning on a gas generator at night since it has yet to arrive. The water will be working next week as will the propane tank being delivered.

Living off the grid has sure been an adventure and tiring as hell, but the end results will be worth it I say!

G'day, Cool!! I've just started doing some posts about our experiences in building an off grid house, so I'll follow your progress. We've been going for 10 years now. It's hard work but good rewards!!

Thank you, following back !

You're definitely making progress!
I didn't realize that New Mexico was so anal about all their building regulations. That's something to think about for the future.

Yeah I wasn't expecting that either. They used to even give the Earthship community that is right down the road hell. They actually closed them down as an "illegal subdivision" about 15 or so years ago. It seems that they want to be seen as progressive about this sorta thing while simultaneously being the heavy hand of government. Even with the solar, all the electricians will try to convince you to go on the grid other than the one in town that deals strictly with solar. The bit about needing a permit to mount panels on my roof really kills me.

Taxation and permit fees...they want that money, just like the mafia wants their cut of the action.

So far they've racked up 1600 in permit dollars from me

Oof, that's a lot of money just for building permits!
