There's howling from behind you as you place your hand on the cafe door. Before you can open it, it opens and The Manager's hand yanks you inside. Inside as you catch your balance again you see The Manager slam the door shut and bar it.
"Well, aren't you a lucky devil, he says, peering through the glass. Don't know how you made it past them."
You ask if he's referring to the howling.
"Indeed I am. The wolves are out tonight. Large as a lion and twice as fierce. How exactly did you make it past them?"
You shrug, wondering about it yourself.
"Well, never mind then. Go ahead and have a seat. It's going to be a while before it's safe to leave."
Just as the howling begins again you ask exactly how it is that you'll know it's safe.
"Well," he says, "first we'll wait for the howling to die down, of course."
You nod. That much makes sense.
"Then we'll give it some time to make sure."
You nod again. Another wise precaution. The Manager leans in close in a whisper.
"Then we'll let plenty of other people go first," he says. Then in his regular voice, "sometimes the old ways are the best ones."
He's smiling.
You remind yourself never to get on The Manager's bad side.
The wolves howl again, as if in agreement.
