OMG lobsters are delicious.
We all know it! If you live on the west coast they aren't easy to come by. That's why Lobsters need to be stocked in Vancouver. I grew up in New Jersey at least until I dropped out of high school to fish Lobsters in the Gulf of Maine. Currently, the fastest growing body of the ocean on Earth. This puts the state at risk of losing over 200 years of heritage and hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. Unlike New York city there is very little industry aside from harvesting North American Lobster (Homarus americanus).
The cost its self-features many Islands rivers and peninsulas of land that creates a considerable amount of shelter for the native sea creatures as well as small fishing boats. Mix this in with a tidal system created by the Atlantic Ocean cycling off cape cod and pooling on the western side of Georges Bank, The coast is a natural treasure for not just Lobsters but oysters alike. The rocky and muddy bottom perfect for Lobsters and the clean rocky rivers perfect for oyster farming. With all this said its no wonder you can snatch up a Brown Butter Lobster Bun at Eventide Oyster Company in Portland, ME for $14. with these local spots earning the highest culinary awards in the nation, it adds to the risk of climate change. Lobsters Left NYC many years ago and you don't hear people talking about it much, but I think they will be missed in the state of Maine.
The Lobstermen are not so much. some say they are respected, however, my experience was they are not for the most part. With the newly wealthy or the already wealthy finding retreat in on of Americas most beautiful states they are often in an awkward position with local families.
The weather Channel Recently ran an article with data outlining lobster migration increasing five fold. From 10 miles per decade to 50, in a Northern migration. You may know that 2015 and 2016 boasted the highest landings for the state. This lead to the local population of fishermen doing as they have been taught by their elders for many years. When they land lobsters the invest in boats.... with large diesel engines. A technology that is one hundred years of age. Adding to the local economic problems with fossil fuel reliance is an opioid addiction. Over my 5 years as a fisherman, I worked on 3 boats. one of my deck mates was a teenage parent and alcoholic and father, another captain whom I fished with over dosed on heroin, and the third was mostly sober and I was the deck boss. There are bigger problems at hand here than hard work pain and injuries. The local people who still love their work and their heritage have not been able to prepare themselves for the changing natural world and economy. Many of the states new residents are financially literate and are prepared to wave the less affluent good bye as their industry shrinks and the price of real estate explodes. This stale mate also features the value of an already flawed education system. With two classes of people used to not communicating the standard of productivity is lowered. people are used to not seeing new things happen, not embracing technology, and not embracing new industry or entrepreneurship.
I myself am all for the digital age and taking advantage of being an entrepreneur. I am not afraid of changing careers and doing what my parents did not. that being said this is not the point. The point is the system failed to keep up American leadership in productivity in Maine. The model of sending every kid off to college to pursue corporate employment did not work, and it distracted an entire generation from the possibilities to preserve their industry. Those sheltered waters I mentioned earlier set the stage for calmer waters, and a Maine Lobsterboat that differs greatly from the Canadain lobster boat. the Maine lobster boat is narrow shallow hulled and fast, designed for day trips. this boat is also commonly less expensive to build than a Canadian offshore Lobster boat. This makes 100% electric lobster boats very viable. the state is very sunny in the summer time when the fishery booms and the overall profit of the industry could have been better if the frequent expense of Diesel fuel and motor replacement were removed. The education system lead to the pending collapse of this states second largest economy. With a consumer based attitude towards white collar social class and agenda and complete lack of technological aptitude. Not to mention the unloved governor who is a Trump supporter.
To add even more irony to this many of the wealthy in this state are liberal, and many of the local aren't. The liberals have an undying affection for college degrees and desk jobs. The locals love their boats and would never trade their heritage should they have the choice. The liberals support clean energy but don't have the blue collar fossil fuel consumers so convinced. And the locals support the character that is "anti establishment" and fights for the working man. When in reality the Republicans have supported pollution all along.
In conclusion. Lobsters will move North. And when the north booms so should Electric fishing boats. This will make lobsters have the greatest sustainability harvest practices of any animal protein on Earth. Hardly any land is used by the industry, Lobsters produce no methane, plus they are organic and wild. They are also the most healthy meat from a dietary stand point.
Canada Please build electric and introduce lobsters to Vancouver!!!!!!!!!!
