Built in the 1830s, London Bridge length of 280 meters served the capital of the British Empire for more than 130 years.
In 1962, the team that serviced the bridge came to the conclusion that the bridge was in an emergency condition. Its further operation is not unreasonable.
It was accepted, at that time, a unique decision - to put the bridge at auction.
An entrepreneur from Arizona, Robert McCullough, responded to the offer to buy. He needed to attract the population to the newly founded city.
The cost of the contract was $ 2.5 million, another $ 7 million was spent on the dismantling of the structure, its transportation to the US and the re-erection, which ended in the fall of 1971. The imported stone blocks, each of which was carefully numbered, were built into the supporting structure exactly in the order in which they were originally located.
It is interesting that originally this bridge did not connect any shores. It was erected on an isthmus connecting the peninsula and a large land. And only after the construction of the bridge, the isthmus was ripped off and the bridge became the only overland route to the newly emerged island.
