Top things to do in London for free

in london •  7 years ago

As most people are fully ware, London is one of the most expensive cities in the world. But it is such a beautiful place to visit which is why the city receives around 19 million visitors each year. The capital of England is full of amazing sights and attractions, but the problem is that most of them cost a small fortune to visit. So that is why I wanted to write this short article about what and where you can go for free in London. Believe it or not, but there are many things you can do to soak up the beauty of this wonderful city that will not cost a penny.

1. Walk along the River Thames:

London has some really beautiful architecture and is famous for historical buildings and bridges. Providing it isn’t raining, taking a leisurely stroll along the River Thames is a perfect way to spend the day.
There are 79 miles of walkway along the Thames, both on the North and South banks starting from Richmond in the far West, all the way to Docklands in the far East.

Walking along the Thames provides the perfect way to see the city without spending a penny. You will enjoy beautiful sights such as; Chiswick Pier, Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, Kew Gardens, Big Ben, The Shard, Tower of London, Thames Barrier, South Bank, and so much more.

2. Visit several museums for free:

A plethora of museums are on offer in London and mostly all of them allow free entry. In south Kensington alone there are several, including the world famous, Natural History Museum and the Science Museum.
There is a museum in London that meets everyone's tastes ranging from, The National Maritime Museum, Imperial War Museum, Tate Modern, Victoria & Albert (V&A),  Royal Air Force Museum, The British Museum, Museum of London Docklands, Ragged School Museum and so much more. All you will need is the cost of a travel card, and you’ll have a full day (or several days) visiting museums for free.

3. A walk in the park:

In terms of parks and woodlands, London is one of the greenest cities in Europe. It boasts a massive 35,000 acres of greenery, a whopping 40% of the city is covered in green public grounds - all accessible free of charge.
Having a picnic in one of the many parks is a great way to relax, often making one feel far from the bustling streets of the capital. There are parks such as, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Green Park, St. James Park, Hampstead Heath, Epping Forest and many more.

4. Visit Buckingham Palace:

A trip to London cannot be complete without visiting the Queen of England - well, at least her place of residence - or at least a look from the outside. While it is possible to go inside the palace, that does cost money, and that is not what this article is all about. But you can go and witness the Changing of the Guards, a ceremony which has taken place for over 300 years.

Each morning, just outside Buckingham Palace, the guards swap shifts at around 10:45. It is a sight unlike any other and it’s well worth the trip. However, you should be warned that it does get very crowded, so be careful with young babies or toddlers as there are a lot of people there. It is also advised to get there as early as possible to find yourself a good spot by the gates.

There are so many things one can do for free in London. I can write a follow up article at a later date with a full list of things to do in London. But for now, I believe these are the top things you would want to do that won’t cost a penny.
