About one third of people over 45 years, and many who are even younger, have a serious psychological problem. Chronic loneliness affects 42.6 million people over 45 years in the US, which is about one third of people in this age group.

Social isolation and loneliness may be more harmful to public health from obesity say. Over 100 different studies have found that loneliness is associated with a 50 percent increase in the risk of premature death.

More than a quarter of the US population lives only. Over half the people in the states have no spouse and the number of marriages decreased continuously.

"The trends show that in America, and not only people are becoming more socially isolated and lonely experience," explains Professor Julian Hall-Lunshtad by the American Psychological Association.

"Being connected with other people socially is a key human need - both for the wellbeing of the individual and for its survival. Extreme examples show how adolescent children in correctional homes, lacking normal human contact, closed in themselves and often die.

Social exclusion and individual insulator were used and even continue to be applied as a form of punishment, "said prof. Lunshtad.
