This couple held their wedding at Muriel’s in the French Quarter. Their balcony has one of the best views in the whole Quarter, looking over picturesque Jackson Square. The lovely bride asked about taking portraits on the balcony. But they had just finished an evening ceremony, and it was already dark. Nearly pitch black. Not to worry. I’ll think of something!

I played around with dragging my shutter to 2/100ths of a second. That little bit of a long exposure gave me just the right length of time with the shutter open to create fun colorful lines of light with my motion blur. I positioned our bride and groom out on the balcony in total darkness. I started the exposure with them outside to the right of the frame, not even pointing the camera at them. The groom chuckled, “it looks like we’re not even in the picture.” And at that point, they weren’t! After the shutter clicked, I quickly repositioned my camera over to position them in the bottom right corner. The motion of the camera created the streaky lights of New Orleans in the background. Then right at the end of the exposure, the flash popped, illuminating our lovely couple in the foreground :)
