The Memorial Day Holiday weekend approaches and Long Island will have its fair share of folks leaving and coming here for the 3 day weekend. Weather wise the Memorial Day weekend is usually the one that is the most problematic. For Long Island it can be especially problematic along shore locations and the East End. The wind direction plays a key role with temperatures. Ocean water temperatures are just into the 50s now so a sea breeze of any kind will have you grabbing for a sweater or jacket. Add to this the tendency for an onshore flow to develop and it complicates things even further. It could be nice and sunny inland and cloudy and foggy along the South Shore and East End. At least from that stand point we aren't looking at any kind of prolonged onshore flow setting up this weekend so that is a good thing. The weekend overall won't be picture perfect but it should be okay most of the time.
Today of course was a beautiful day though perhaps the 20 to 30 mph northwest wind made things a bit annoying especially for pollen sufferers. Tonight will be nice and clear as the satellite picture this evening shows a minimal amount of clouds. Wednesday will be another beautiful day with sunshine and highs reaching 70 to 75 with only the immediate shore experiencing a sea breeze. No issues regarding the radar as it is nice and quiet around here and should remain so probably until Thursday night.
A warm front will be trying to move through Thursday which means we start with clouds but we should go to a mix of sun and clouds before too long with highs reaching the 70s in most places though only in the 60s east end and along the south shore. Thursday night brings a cold front a chance for some showers and thunderstorms.
Friday could be a repeat performance of today with sunshine and a gusty wind, low humidity and highs into the 70s. Then comes the weekend where another cold front approaches for Saturday night. We could see some thunderstorms with that front but the daytime Saturday should be fine with a mix of sun and clouds. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s but again at the shore at least 10 to 15 degrees lower with the ocean wind.
Sunday and Monday will hinge on that front getting hung up to our south and how active will that front be. I'm thinking that it will be far enough south to spare us issues so look for a mix of sun and clouds for Sunday with highs in the 70s inland, 60s along the shore. Monday Memorial Day will be dry during the day with a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the 70s. Another cold front will bring the chance for thunderstorms but they should hold off until after sunset which means Monday should be dry from sunrise to sunset. This is the way it looks at the moment so I'm cautiously optimistic on the holiday weekend.
Please note that with regards to any tropical storms or hurricanes, should a storm be threatening, please consult your local National Weather Service office or your local government officials about what action you should be taking to protect life and property.
