In the Book of Proverbs there is a wise phrase that is a synthesis of many stories from the Bible: "Whoever fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge" Proverbs 14:26.
This proverb may have its origins in a story from the Book of Exodus, in what is known as the story of the death of the firstborns. As the book tells it, only those families that feared God were saved from the divine punishment.
The Book of Exodus relates that Moses had appeared before Pharaoh to free the Hebrews, but Pharaoh's heart hardened and in response to Moses' request, he increased his oppression towards the Hebrews. And so a series of plagues were unleashed on Egypt, but the pharaoh remained firm in his decision, until God's last punishment arrived that broke the Pharaoh's heart. Moses ordered all the Hebrews to mark the lintels of their doors with the blood of slain cattle so that the exterminating angel would not enter their houses, and in this way, the angel killed all the firstborns of Egypt during the night.
The fear of God in this story became a strength and spiritual protection in the time of desolation and anguish, and especially for the children of those who hoped in the Lord. It is important to remember that the fear of God is the most important gift of the Old Testament, this gift is throughout the entire biblical story the gift that links men with God. The spiritual gift of fear of God is defined as constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, and stability. And this gift is better understood when is seen from another perspective, the opposite of the fear of God is the hardness of the heart.
With its simple teachings, the Book of Proverbs invites the readers of the Bible to enter in the true spirituality, but men have the freedom to choose between the truth and the pretty lies.
