The Second Book of Chronicles tells us about the life of an exceptional person, King Hezekiah, who ruled for almost thirty years in the Kingdom of Judah. This King chose the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity) as his spiritual path in life: "He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done" 2 Chronicles 29:2.
Hezekiah acted with wisdom and recognized the sovereignty of God, and thus began a great spiritual and religious reform in his Kingdom, the Bible tells us, the king instructed the priests and the Levites in the covenant with the Lord: "My sons, do not be negligent now, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before him and serve him" 2 Chronicles 29:11.
And with the fear of God, Hezekiah received an additional blessing, the common sense that comes from this spiritual gift. Hezekiah proved to be a person prepared for setbacks and misfortunes from every point of view.
The Assyrians had destroyed the Kingdom of Israel and deported all its inhabitants, and thus Hezekiah had to face, isolated from his natural allies, an invasion of his Kingdom by the tyrant Sennacherib.
But like his ancestor David when he faced Goliath, Hezekiah was not afraid of men but of God. Hezekiah prepared the defenses of his capital Jerusalem, he called the prophet Isaias, and motivated his people to resist the siege of the city: "Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles" 2 Chronicles 32:7-8.
And his sensible actions had results, the King Hezekiah triumphed and was a blessing for his nation: "Hezekiah had very great wealth and honor" 2 Chronicles 32:27.
In the life of Hezekiah, beyond some simple personal sins, all the blessings of the Lord were fulfilled.
