Baden – Powell, the founder of the Boy Scout Movement was born on the 22nd February 1857 in Gilwell, England. (Later he was awarded the title Lord of Gilwell.) His father was H. P. Powell a great scholar of the time and a clergyman. The mother had to bear the great responsibility of bringing up seven children including Baden, when the father died in 1860 while the latter was just 3 years old.

As little Baden was an intelligent, observant, enduring and courageous boy, he did his best not to became a burden to the mother and to support her in all aspects to face the great stuggle of life.

After the basic education he had in a Grammar school he entered Charter House, a prestigious school. During the period of his studentship there he was engaged in recreational activities such as fishing, hunting, swimming, hiking, mountaineering and rough games like soccer and boxing. He had other interests and talents as acting, singing and painting also.

After leaving school young Baden Powell joined the British Army and in no time he became an officer in the cavalry. As Britain was engaged in wars in its colonies in India and Africa at the time, Officer Baden Powell had to go there to support his people.

His first station was South Africa, where the Zulus, a warlike African tribe was rebelling against the British rule there. The British launched military actions to crush them, and Powell had to participate in it.

At a decisive and critical moment during another war, officer Baden Powell bravely held Mapeking and Buluwayo, two important towns in South Africa against the Boer armies. He spied on the enemy’s movements, challenged and attacked them at the most appropriate moment and made them withdraw, employing his military tactics. It is reported that he efficiently made use of various strategies developed by himself, to protect his life and those of the British soldiers. (later he included these strategies in the Boy Scout Movement)

When Baden Powell returned home after retiring from the army, he was honoured by the British government by conferring a Lordship upon him. Thereafter he was known as the Lord of Gilwell.

He was a very popular and much loved person among the young men and school children in Britain at the time. Powell made them acquire a personality that was ever ready to encounter challenges, difficult situations, defeat and even threats on life, with presence of mind.

He launched all his efforts and endeavours through his Boy Scout Movement. His book ‘A Handbook for Scouts’ was very popular in most of the countries of the world even today.

He conducted the first Scout Camp on the island Brown Sea in 1907. In 1920 the first Scout Jamboree was held in London. Next international jamborees were conducted in Denmark (1924), England (1929), Hungary (1933) and Netherlands (1937) successively. The World Girl Guide Movement was founded by his sister Agnen Powell with the help of Olave, Baden Powells wife, in 1910.

Baden Powell decided to spend the rest of his life in Kenya, Africa, where he got much of the valued and useful experiences, in life. He settled down in Kenya, lived there for few years and passed away on the 8th January 1941.

Today the Boy Scout Movement founded by Lord Baden Powell does an invaluable service to the young people throughout the world in helping them to form and shape their lives enabling them to face the innumerable challenges of life and sermount them courageously with presence of mind.
