Kedarnath Dham is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site located in the Rudraprayag district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is one of the four Chota Char Dham sites and is particularly dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated at an altitude of about 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayan range near the Mandakini River.
Key Features of Kedarnath Dham:
The Temple: The Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are the holiest Shiva temples in India. It is believed to have been originally built by the Pandavas from the Mahabharata and later reconstructed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD.
Location and Accessibility: Due to its high altitude, Kedarnath is not easily accessible. The nearest road head is at Gaurikund, from where pilgrims typically undertake a 16 km trek to reach the temple. In recent years, helicopter services have also become available to aid pilgrims in reaching Kedarnath.
Natural Beauty: Kedarnath is surrounded by stunning snow-capped peaks and lush green forests, making it not only a spiritual destination but also a place of natural beauty. The temple is located against the backdrop of the mighty Kedarnath peak.
Opening Season: The temple is open to devotees only from late April to early November due to extreme weather conditions. It remains closed for the rest of the year when the region is covered in snow.
2013 Floods: Kedarnath faced a devastating flash flood in June 2013, which caused significant damage to the town and its surroundings. However, the temple itself remained mostly intact, and since then, reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts have restored much of the area.
Significance in Hindu Mythology: According to legend, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva to seek forgiveness for their sins after the Kurukshetra war. Lord Shiva, not wanting to forgive them so easily, took the form of a bull and hid in the Garhwal region. The hump of the bull appeared in Kedarnath, where the temple is located today.
Kedarnath Dham is a significant spiritual destination for Hindus and attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists from around the world each year.
