I gave a block of ice to the plants. It hit 117F at the highest point. It was 83F indoors. All the chocolate NOT in the refrigerator melted. Even with the AC on all day, the battle against the heat was lost.
I was wary of driving. Someone had asked where I kept my fire extinguisher for my car earlier this week. I've driven my bug sans fire extinguisher for many years without worry until today. It was hotter in Los Angeles than Death Valley Desert. The thought of driving filled me with dread. Luckily, I didn't have to teach today. My students were away on vacation.
M called. His friend and her mother didn't want to go to the Hollywood Bowl in the heat to see Jennifer Hudson perform. We were gifted with box seats. It was breezy outside. Gusts of warm and hot air!! It felt like walking through a hot kitchen with random oven doors opening here and there.
The heat did not discourage the thousands from coming out. I was amazed at the performance. Imagine an orchestra and dancers and singers working in a hot yoga stadium. They did it. They didn't allow the heat to oppress them or their audience for the evening. I forgot it was hot. Jennifer Hudson seemed to be having a ball. This was her first performance at the Hollywood Bowl. This 100F+ evening was hers. She owned it, sharing stories of her journey to get to that stage and singing a tribute to her hero, Whitney Houston.
I loved her red dress that she wore for her encore piece. It took over a dozen people to carry her train of flowing red fabric. I wish I took better photos but there is a no iPad rule at the Hollywood Bowl and that is how I predominantly take photos. I winged it with my friend's device.
By the time I got home it was 88F and 2am. My roommate was sleeping sprawled on the living room couch. The AC was on high and it was 83F in the house. The plants outside flopped in despair for water. Today was the hottest day I've experienced in Los Angeles....and it turned out pretty cool.

I lived in the LA area for years -- but never that hot. Bless Jennifer Hudson for keeping her cool in hot LA.

I was amazed how the show went on during seemingly oppressive heat. Jennifer Hudson was thrilled and inspired. I could hear her happiness in her voice. I know it's electric to be on that stage.
This is a slice of a view from that stage. Taken a few years ago when my group was rehearsing for a show.

Too HOT for me. It gets hot and humid on the coast, but the humidity make it worse.

Rain would be soooo nice. When the air feels heavy, it feels like rain is only a wish away.
