Melian was the 4th greatest and most powerful Maiar. She was the fairest and wisest in all Middle-Earth. Before coming to middle-earth, Melian served the Valar Vána and Estë, and she used to dweel in Lorien because she loves the shadows of the great trees. When the Elves awoke on the shore of Cuiviénen she departed from Valinor and went to Middle-earth, where she filled its silence with her singing and the singing of her birds.
During her stay in Doriath, the city she lived in with her husband the Elf Elu Thingol, with which she had a daughter named Luthien, she became mentor of Galadriel.
