Pain can injure us deeply and can change us in ways that we do not understand at first. The fact is that living implies experiencing pain. Love is also a powerful emotion reminds us of the vibrant nature of existence. Pain has other qualities as well, mainly that of being a teacher. A thought of how to avoid pain in the future can be a useful tool. At some point most of us will experience the particular pain of losing a loved one. That is the type of pain I'm thinking about today. The pain of having loved and lost.
First of all, to have loved.
To have loved means that what you experienced with the other person was unique. Unique in its time, place and experience. It also means that much would have been given for the partner. Sacrifices of time, sweat, and tears were possible. All for the loved one. To have loved means that I would have given it all for the loved one.
Secondly to have lost.
To have lost means to forget where you placed an item. It did not vanish, it was moved or misplaced. It's material reality persists somewhere else. It's existence haunts somewhere just not near. The most dreadful thing to lose is your mind and your heart. If you lose those, you lose all grounding.
Love is a product of a healthy heart. Love flows from the heart to nourish others. To heal wounds, bring life, and keep nature in its course. When I lost the love I thought was mine, it felt as though my heart was misplaced. I wandered without aim for some time. Then I remembered that without a heart I cannot live. I need its inspiration. So I set out to find my hearth again, and that I did. There it was, sitting in peace and serenity. Thankfully, I never did lose my heart.
I realized that I can love, but to not give my heart away. I also realized that few things are "forever" and love is not one of them. It is natural and good to love, but not to gift the life-giving heart away.
To live.
Now that the clouds are clearing, I can see what the purpose was of loving and losing. The purpose is not to hold tightly to was is not meant to be. The objective is to let go. To not-oppose the universe and its divine processes. Our life changes and loops back in itself. Pain teaches us what to avoid. Many times the time we feel in love is just having held on too long. To live is to lose (let go), so know know to let go and continue living.
The art of letting go is one that is truly a life endeavor. In fact, all of life may be a trial in letting go. I have enjoyed this quote for a while and it resonates with me.
“Death is a stripping away of all that is not you. The secret of life is to “die before you die” and find that there is no death.”
-Eckhart Tolle.

Howdy sir deepwaters! Very thought provoking piece here and well written! I wish pain wasn't such an important part of learning but there's no avoiding it!
