the last cookie goes to the one you love

My student who once shunned the L word now has a girlfriend. He and his girl want to go out on a date but are not allowed. They are only 11 years old.

Miss JNET: “You two can be happy being boyfriend and girlfriend at school. You’re both young. Last year, you hated playing songs that even had anything to do with love. Don’t try to grow up too fast.”

H: “She really wants to go on a real date.”

Miss JNET: “You can do sweet things for each other at school.”

H: “I gave her a dollar just to be random.”

Miss JNET: “No no no. You don’t give cash like that to a girlfriend. Ew.”

It was a short conversation that lasted the walk to my car after a piano lesson. It would be continued next week. It bothered me all week.

I shared the story with my nephew over Mother’s Day weekend. I’ve been enjoying more lengthy first love talks with my nephew since he started kindergarten. I’ve advised him to not pull anyone’s hair, say mean or odd teasing statements if he liked anyone.

Auntie JNET: “No one enjoys feeling confused. Just be kind and let them know they are extra special to you. Maybe give them a cookie. Cookies make everyone happy.”

My nephew would give a shy smile and giggle. I shared with him my student who gave a dollar to his girlfriend.

Auntie JNET: “That’s a Grandma gift! Grannies are always putting a dollar in your hand. Remind me to tell my student to not be a grandma.”

My nephew is now in third grade and says he doesn’t have a girlfriend yet. He smiles every time I ask him. His older brother’s usual response is to gross out.

My love advice is sinking in though. He made me the happiest auntie this past weekend. As I was packing, I found he stashed a box of his favorite cookies on my bag. He wanted me to have the last two cookies for the drive home.

I showed my student my nephew’s gift. He’s going to sweeten his boyfriend approach for his girl. Maybe give a cookie or a toy. I think he wants to be more sentimental now. I will hear next week. They’ve officially been an item for a full month now. It’s nice that he likes to give me updates. Ahhh eleven year olds and first crushes. ❤️

I hope you have someone to be sweet to give the last cookie to.
