I grew up with fireplaces like this. Nothing beats the warm sweaty dry feeling in the mornings. Unfortunately, they mean higher insurance bills in the U.S. so most Americans have gotten rid of them :'(

    Oh this happens to be the house I grew up in :)

    P.S. Insurance companies is something i don't love!
