One of the most common weakness we have as human beings is a sense of entitlement. Some call it the ‘Me, me, me’ syndrome. It’s the biggest hindrance to truly experiencing or giving love. The expectation that we are owed or we deserve more than we actually do. The unreasonable belief that certain privileges should be ours whether we have done anything to earn them or not.
The sense that others should drop everything to attend to our needs.
As a toddler it’s probably cute and acceptable for a while when one throws tantrums to express dissatisfaction at not getting what they want when they want to have it.
But that novelty fades very fast and one cannot continue through life expecting special treatment or to be let off the hook all the time.
Do you think this applies to you?
How about a quick self-entitlement test?
Are you the kind of person that resorts to sulking for long periods of time when things do not go your way or when a friend is not able to help you out at the short notice with something you consider urgent?
Do you unashamedly impose unrealistic demands on the members of your family and your friends?
Do you turn on them quickly with a guilt trip saying they do not love you if they are not able to deliver?
Are you in the habit of punishing those that love you with the silent treatment when they disappoint you?
Is it possible that you may be taking more than you give in all your relationships and expecting to get your way whatever the cost?
Complete with the tendency to resort to self- pity rounds using one form of social media after another to make sure everyone knows just how much you have been wronged?
How did you score on a scale of 1-10?
The interesting thing is, while so much time is spent focused on what you are not getting, there is hardly enough time to consider giving back.
How often are you there for your friends or family?
Do people ever call you when they are in trouble?
Why do people only expect to hear from you when you want something from them.I believe each one of us has been guilty of harboring a sense of entitlement at one point or another in life.
Instead of a sense of responsibility and gratitude we have been concerned with ourselves.
Let’s not be like leeches that attach themselves to a source till it they have drained the life blood out of it.
instead of asking what’s in it for you at every opportunity; take a different course and ask what you can do to make a difference.
Your heart will be lighter and your world will be brighter if there is room for more than just you in your world.
