Chapter 4
"Hey love" Marie's voice echoed down the line as she spoke with her male work mate turn lover, Andy. The deep dark craving she possessed for him had chased her all the way home from work, she was dying to have another round of love making. She wasn't sure she loved him, though she loved it when her legs went cycling all up in air with his junk violently thrusting in between them. "What does it matter? Love is as good as non existent, Its just something that happens to those who give a damn". Those where the lines she used to justify her conscience.
"how you doing, sexy ass?" Andy replied with the sexiest undertone to hit Marie's ears. And just like her, he too was home waiting to have lunch with his family.
"I was wondering if you could come over. My back aches. I think I need a massage " Marie chipped in before he could catch the next breath
"I'm about having lunch. I'll come see you once I'm done eating" he said with much assurance
"are you choosing your lunch over me?" Marie softly raised the tone with no intentions of sounding harsh
"Not at all love. I'll see you soon" andy calmly voiced out but she cut him mid air
"I want to see you now. I don't care how you are going to do it" she said and hung the call up on him, took a glance at her somewhat scattered room, brushed her hands on the sheets, touched few more places and boom, it was ready then she hit the shower.
"I'm going out " Andy said to Harriet trying as much to mask his intentions with a straight voice which always worked
"I'm almost done with lunch. Ain't you gonna eat?" his wife said with her eyes fixed at all the disappointment she wore on her face as it reflected in his own, she's always had her way around her man but for a moment it felt like she was slowly loosing on that. To crow it all the hurt her life had ever witnessed, Andy Voiced the words that made her heart shatter like broken glass falling on a tiled floor, "I've lost my appetite".
" You've always loved white soup with pounded yam And all of a sudden you've lost your appetite for it? How strange" Harriet said with a suspecting voice.
"Say anything you want to say. I am not eating the food" Andy replied as he set his foot in motion to leave the kitchen but just as his arms reached for the knob Harriet's voice hit him from behind halting his steps like a vehicle before the red light. "It's another woman right?". He turned his head first then his whole body followed with his eyes gazing into hers which by this time was up in flames.
"Answer me. It's another woman. You choose another woman over me. How dare you Andy! After everything we've been through. You have the guts to look outside" Harriet aggressively let out as hot droplets of tears made a line down her left cheek.
"Just before you start nagging and telling me how supportive you've been. I'm not seeing another woman. I just told you I've lost my appetite. What does it have to do with seeing another woman?" Andy said trying his best to avoid starting a quarrel so he won't get late for his date,
"When was the last time we ate as a family? When was the last time you spent the weekend with us? When was the last time we had a quality time for each other? Now you're always busy with one thing or engaged with another And today that started well you are about ending it with another excuse, you've lost your appetite" Harriet voiced as she let out her soul through her lips,
"You must be out of your mind this afternoon. You think I give a damn about you and your kids? Oh go to hell. I don't love you anymore. Can't you see it? Cook for your children and leave me alone. Is that too much to ask? " so did Andy's words come out and they left her standing motionless and speechless like the statue of liberty. He walked out of her kitchen and slammed the door, but she could feel something deeper, she could feel him slamming the door of her life. She fell to her knees as the tears flowed freely to the fall.
Why or how could he be so mean is a question that even I cannot answer. They courted for about two years after which he walked her down the isle and it's been seven years of a very happy marriage since then. But he still has the guts to ditch her for another woman. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't just understand the reason behind everything he had said ealier. The more she thought, the more the tears kept pouring to the ground.
"Mummy.... Mummy" Nadia called out shaking the figure of Harriet, her mum that lay asleep like some 3 year old kid. She had fallen asleep on the kitchen table after cooking. "Ye...sss" Harriet replied faintly as she opened her eyes to the blurry figure of Nadia standing before her. "I'm hungry" Nadia said as kept shaking. Harriet yawned, ran her hands across her eyes in an itch, took a quick look round the kitchen then sighed. She looked at Nadia from her swollen reddish eyes who was almost in tears because of emptiness that filled her stomach. "When did you return from lesson?" she asked
"A couple of hours ago we've been in the garden playing " replied hungry Nadia.
"Where is your sister?" she questioned Nadia again this time as though she had just recalled a snippet from a nightmare. "She is talking to the boy next door" Nadia said and
she heaved a sigh of relief. They were all she had now and she wasn't ready to lose any one of them. She picked a pot of soup to place on the burner then a thought crossed her mind nd she grasped it before it could slip away. Turning to the girl child before her she spoke "Go and call your sister, Both of you should get dressed. We are going to see Uncle Peterson "
"Are we eating there today?" Nadia innocently asked in reply
"Yes baby. We are paying him a surprise visit. He'll have to feed us" she answered with a smile that revealed her immaculate white teeth
"wow! sounds good" Nadia cut in smiling back at her mum who playfully pushed her away "Go and get dressed"
The little girl ran outside to call her sister then up to her room, threw a gown on body, powder on her face and then she went downstairs to join the others. The trio hopped into the car and Harriet drove out. She wasn't sure she wanted to see Peterson, she wouldn't want him to see her in that state, and most importantly she didn't want to involve him on her marital affairs. All the same, she needed to talk to someone and definitely that someone was not Peterson her friendly stranger turn crush.
She drove for a while then took a left turn, drove for a while and began to slow down. "Mum, Uncle Peterson lives here?" Nadine asked, "No darling. We are not seeing him today again. Maybe next week. Let's just have dinner and then go home" she explained as she pulled the car to a halt in front of an eatery.
They went in and filled their stomachs then stayed the for a short time before returning home safely. She tucked them into bed after the night prayers and retired to her room.
