This story is about retired Austrian - German weightlifter and Olympic Gold medalist, Matthias Steiner. He competed for Austria from 1998 to 2005 and won many medals in different championships. After 2005 he married Susann who was having German citizenship and left Austrian federation.
He headed to 2008 Beijing Olympic games having made a promise. The year before, his wife died tragically in a car accident. At her besides in the hospital, Steiner vowed to her that he would win an Olympic medal. The German was determined to uphold that pledge in Beijing.
In the Finals, he sat in the fourth place ahead of clean and jerk competition. On his last attempt, he had to lift 285 kg for the gold, more than he'd ever lifted in his career. Against all the odds, he made the lift, fulfilled his wish and promise to win the gold.
At the medal ceremony, he carried a photo of his late wife so that she could be with him on the podium.
