Merina was a very pretty girl. Her parents were really tensed that it might cause her trouble. She need not even apply makeup or wear fashion accessories to look great. Her facial features were enough to make men stare. Merina should have been the haughty type of girl but she was very down to earth and kind too.
Merina used to volunteer for the neighborhood activities. She liked to help serve in the soup kitchen. It reminded her that life was not a bed of roses for most people. While her friends hung out in places where the poor could not even dare to peep, Merina was busy packing food for the homeless. Her parents were proud of her. They hoped she would get to meet a person who was worthy of her.
One day, around mid-morning, an old man came staggering into the kitchen. She ran towards him and caught him before he fell. She made the man sit down and called for other volunteers to help her. They came and together they asked him if he felt alright. Merina went and brought back hot soup which the old man drank without even looking up. He must have been very hungry. Merina looked at him sadly with tears in her eyes. She wished that no one should go hungry. The old man looked up and saw her face. He smiled at her.
Merina made him comfortable and got up to bring a sandwich and a chocolate bar. She gave it to him. It was her lunch but he did not have to know about it. The old man thanked her and she asked him if he had a house. He replied that he had a house but had forgotten the way. She suspected that he must have strayed from his house. She asked if he had an identity card. He handed her one and she understood that he lived in another part of the city. She asked her fellow volunteers to look after him and she called the police to ask if there had been a man missing case. The officer asked the details and she gave it. At last, they traced his son and contacted him.
Chris, the son came over and met Merina. He was very thankful to her for locating him and giving him the details about his dad. He talked to his dad who was in the beginning stages of dementia. Chris took his dad home and also contacted the police telling them that he had taken him back. Chris came back the next day and met Merina. She was happy to see him and asked about his dad. He replied that he was okay and was now looked after by a nurse. He asked her if he could buy her a coffee. She presumed that it was perhaps to thank her for her kindness.
Chris smiled at her and said that he was captivated by both her beauty and kindness and wished to be friends with her. Merina agreed and they both went to a cafe after duties were over. He asked about her family, her friends likes and dislikes and so on. She did feel he was rushing a bit but replied without giving too many details.
She drank a hot chocolate and he had a black coffee. Merina asked about him and he said that he was running his own confectionary business, downtown. She did not ask for more details and he smiled seeing that she was still wary. Merina knew that they were both attracted to each other but it was only the first meeting. She asked him if he would be comfortable with her visiting his dad. He was surprised but very happy. He told her that the old man would be very pleased. He loved visitors and would be delighted if Merina came over.
Merina visited Chris’s father, Alexander, during the next weekend. She reminded him that she had seen him and he held her hands and cried softly. He told her that he knew she had given him hot soup and her lunch too. Chris was moved and he just stepped over and hugged her. Merina was overwhelmed. Chris’s mother had passed away and his dad had struggled to try to reconcile with the loss. Alexander was losing memory fast. Chris had nearly lost it when his dad had gone missing but was very relieved to know that he had been found. He had been very surprised to see the girl who had found his father and helped him reunite with the family. Merina was indeed very beautiful in and out. He had asked about her and found that she was a kind girl who used to volunteer every weekend instead of having fun like her friends.
Chris wondered if Merina was meant for him. He believed in destiny. He had also learned that she liked chocolate very much. Chocolate was her favorite flavor. She always preferred it to others and even though her friends used to coax her to try new flavors, she could never have enough of chocolate. He took Merina to his office and also gave her a tour of the place where chocolates and other confectionaries were prepared and packed. She was awestruck and said she liked the chocolates and had not known it was his. He just hugged her and hoped she would like him too. He did not want to scare her away and told her that he valued her friendship. She smiled and agreed that they would take it slowly. Chris and Merina walked together, holding hands.
