LTE vs WiFi: Battle or cooperation

in lte •  8 years ago

According to Gartner, the latest trends in the World shows that the number of connected devices will reach 20.8 billion by 2020 and the most of them are to be connected over wireless networks. The fact of connected devices growth will definitely cause licensed spectrum deficit in recent future. One of the solutions for the problem is on the utilization of unlicensed spectrum by mobile devices for improved performance when the struggle for resources becomes tough. This scenario is common for crowded business centres, sport and other major events, transport terminals (airports, rail stations). The unlicensed band utilization in mobile networks is developed within the context Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A). Currently, the major issue for LTE-A concerns its coexistence of LTE transmissions in unlicensed spectrum with other unlicensed technologies, especially with Wi-Fi.

Solution seems to be clear.

However a number of issues are still without an answer.

  • Regulation
  • World wide standartisation
  • Market readiness
  • What medium will be dominant
  • Influence on 5G develeopment
  • to be added

Is there any experts on topic raised to add more obstacles?
