Hello my dear Steemians friends!!
Today we want to show you the capital city of province, GIRONA.
Is so big that it will be difficult for us to summarize everything in one article, so we will focuse at the most touristic zone. How could it be otherwise in its history and antiquity.
We leave our car parked in a parking near the city center and on the way we are struck by an old building that is the central post office.
This building was built between 1916 and 1920 , and was opened in 1922. Its main facade full of sculptures, work of Federic Marés i Deolovol, stand out of the building.
On the right side of the post office we find the Independence Square, what is presided by a sculpture dedicated to the defenders of Girona, and its beautiful gardens were made by Ricard Giralt in 1924.
Nowadays, this square is surrounded by all kinds of bars and restaurants that offer the typical tapas. Each and every one of them with his terrace.
The bell tower of the church shows us the way to follow.
To access to the old town we must pass a bridge that kept our attention with its architecture and that is joining the new city with the hanging houses of the old town.
The bridge is one of the favorite places for tourist to take pictures because the views of the famous and colourful hanging houses are spectacular.
And how could it be otherwise , today was my day to be a tourist and I couldn´t miss my photo.
We passed the bridge and crossed the hanging houses through a narrow corridor, that gives access to the cobblestone street where the shopping area is located and on the left we have a rise that take us to the church.
As we get closer it becomes increasingly difficult for us to stop taking pictures.
We arrive at the Basilica of Sant Feliu and we don´t stop seeing tourists , who are delighted with the beauty of the place.

It was the first cathedral of Girona , until in 717 it was occupied by the Muslims passing to be a mosque. From the end of the 8th century, it became a church.
Leaving on the left side, just behind the church, we can visit the Arab baths paying an entrance of only 2€ per person , we can go to tour their stays.
A particular Roman construction of the 12th century , where its most striking element is the stay of the entrance. A cover with annular vault , the dome that sits in thin columns, crown the central pool that presides over this area, destined to be a locker room and rest area.
This Arab baths are divided into five rooms: the locker rooms, the cold room, the warm room, the hot room and the furnace room and the boiler room.
Once past the boiler room , we went to a kind of terrace accessed by a thin staircase.
When we go up , we have a full view of the archaeological walk.
Every time we find this place more spectacular, we can´t depress our desire to discover it.

The old town is surrounded by large walled areas that surround a large number of Romanesque and Gothic buildings that can be covered by this impressive walkway viewpoint of the city.
We have to walk a lot and rise a large number of stairs before reaching the viewpoint.
After a good ascending walk , we reach the highest area of the walls.
If you suffer vertigo , don´t look down.
We follow the walk bordering the high part of the wall , that takes us to the back of the Cathedral of Santa María.
The Cathedral is located at the highest point of the city. Its construction began in the 11th century in Romanesque style, the Gothic style entered two centuries later. The cathedral was finished in the 18th century.
Walking down the big stairs of the cathedral , we return to the shop zone , in search of the famous lioness of Girona located at the foot of the Basilica of Sant Feliu.
The legend says that who kisses the ass of the lioness, will return to Girona and kissing it symbolizes an act of respect towards the city.
I hope you enjoyed our visit to this area of the city and wil follow us to continue travelling to more magical places of Catalonia.
