Most of the new watches that you buy nowadays come with an original manufacturer's warranty.
Lately, some of the big watch companies like Rolex, are offering ridiculously long warranties to attract new customers; for example, like 10 years long!
I say “ridiculous,” because it's actually overkill. It is highly likely that the stuff the warranty does cover will never happen to your watch.
The reality is that a manufacturer's warranty only covers manufacturing defects; e.g., if they didn't lubricate the watch movement correctly and it dried up prematurely, causing the watch to keep time inaccurately during the first year.
I have seen this with a couple of AP that we have sent in to Audemars Piget for service. When it comes back from the manufacturer, the report shows “Premature Expiration of Lubrication.” Ouch! Sounds painful!
Normally, the things that people worry about are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty; things such as physical damage. Yup, if you run it over with your Ferrari, you're out of luck!
Keep in mind though that when you send a watch in to the factory for repair, it can take months to get that watch back! That's not necessary a bad thing and I do recommend it for some complicated watches and chronographs.
But for a regular watch, like a Rolex, I don't even care about the warranty and would instead take it a to a highly skilled watchmaker locally for repairs (unless you're dealing with a super complicated problem).
Here are some of the things that can void your watch's warranty:
Opening the case – Trust me, they'll know.
Any repairs done to the watch – Trust me, they'll know.
Alterations to the watch (things like swapping dials, or making any other alterations) – The only alternations that I would have done on a watch that's within the original warranty term is changing a bezel or strap, because these things are superficial and reversible.
How do you feel about the importance of a manufacturer's warranty when it comes to a luxury watch? Let me know how you feel in the comments below.

great stuff. I had no idea any traditional watch content was on steemit. I have seen your videos on YouTube. Really happy to see your article. Following.
On your article, I think Rolex warranties are great. Also , I believe rolex offers a 5 year warranty and 10 year is the service interval.
And fixing only manufacturing defects is kind of universal. Its not just with watches, but with any product warranty only covers manufacturing defects. I really can't drop my iphone on a concrete floor (ouch!) and expect to get a replacement. At least Rolex gives a 5 year warranty. It would be great if Omega and other brands also did the same. I had a problem with power reserve of one of my omega's and i did not have to think twice before giving it for a check to an omega dealer. the watch was just one year old. I think longer warranties are great, whatever they cover.

True, but that's true with a lot of luxury watch brands. What's important is that customers understand what the warranty covers and what voids it. Thank you for your comment.
