this man, known as the "Screaming Mummy" was hanged and buried without mummification as punishment for a most awful crime. His name was Pen-ta-Were, and he murdered his father.
The screaming mummy was discovered in the Deir el-Bahari cache in the late 1800s. His body was unmummified,and wrapped in a sheepskin (considered impure by the Egyptians). He had been preserved in natron only, with none of the ordinary rituals or preparations for a standard mummy. The result was his preserved but dessicated look, and the horrific grimace of his face :(
It has since emerged that this mummy is the son of Pharaoh Ramesses III, and in a gruesome twist, the prince had been involved in a conspiracy which successfully murdered the Pharaoh. They hoped to make Pen-ta-were the next king, but the conspiracy was discovered and the actors executed. Today, the Screaming Mummy gives mute testimony to a very dark time :o
