Ma’alaea Freight Trains - Fastest Wave In The World!

in maalaea •  8 years ago  (edited)

Ma’alaea Bay Maui, aka Freight Trains, is known for having the fastest wave in the world. This world famous surf spot has breaks on both sides of the Harbor, and I was lucky enough to bodyboard both breaks this past weekend.

The waves start their long monstrous barrels from “Off the Wall” and travel all the way down the coastline slamming into the V shaped bay. I went on this surf trip with @mattandcristina, be sure to check out their steemit blog post about the trip.

I like to go to Ma’alaea in the summer because I can see the bay from my house, I simply look out the sliding glass door to see if the waves are breaking! I live up on the mountain, far from the beach, luckily Ma'alaea is one of the few surf spots in my purview. This weekends early summer swell was traveling from a south westerly direction, which is turned out to be a perfect direction perfect for the spot!

When we got to Ma’alaea it was a little windy, but after battling the wind on the North shore we were not going to let a little wind get in the way of taking good drone video of the surf. We both brought our drones, got all our gear on and headed in the water.

There was a staircase leading into the sea. We found a new beach access tucked away on the left side of the hotels. I had never entered the water from that side before, so never noticed the staircase before. I strapped on my Helmet, and took the staircase to barrels!

Matt and I paddled out to the break. The waves were not too big, but just right. I had my Go-Pro rolling in my usual search for the perfect barrel. Once I got out there I caught one right away, and then another and another. I dropped into some pretty hollow barrels. There is a rock poking up in one spot, so I am always trying to keep one eye on it. One barrel I had might have been the one, however, I must have the Go-Pro switched off for that one, isn’t that always the case. After catching what I thought was a good start of barrels for editing my movie, I passed the Go-Pro helmet cam over to Matt to see what he would get. He caught three waves before I got the helmet back, check out these still images from the session.

With the drone above Matt caught a few really good barrels! After a full afternoon of barrel hunting, we decided to go check out another spot on the west side, possibly Oluwalu, or Thousand Peaks. However once we swung around on the highway there was thick traffic. Matt realized that he heard sirens about 20 minutes ago in the water, so we bailed on that plan and decided to just go to the other side of the harbor.

I launched my drone and got to see the bay from all sorts of new perspectives.

Be sure to check out my video below:

After flying I jumped back in the water for another bodyboarding session. The waves at Ma’alaea were so fast and so clean, it is no wonder why the break is known for the fastest waves in the world, and I can’t wait to go back!
