I was in Skopje a few weeks ago. That was my first time in Macedonia, a small country between Greece and Serbia in South-East Europe. I hardly knew anything about it. I had read that Mother Teresa was born there, and that there was a Millennium cross above the city, so I expected to find an old Christian orthodox country, much like Greece, but I was wrong. Arriving by night, I was surprised to see a billboard advertising for a car, not in the local currency, but in Euros (205€ per month to lease a Skoda Octavia). There was next to it another ad for another car with this time, the price in Euros, and in the local currency (a Lexus NX). This is highly unusual to see adverts in a currency which isn't local, but this tells a lot about how much the country wants to join the European Union.
Unfortunately, I'm afraid it doesn't deserve to join. I certainly don't mind the local culture or food, which shows strong Turkish influence, but I care about religious freedom, and Macedonia is highly disappointing on that point. It was shocking to be on Skopje's main square, just in front of the statue of Alexander the Great and the Marriott hotel, and to hear 5 times a day, the huge loudspeakers from the Old Bazaar's Mosque calls to prayers.
This is like Iran or Saudi Arabia, both official Muslim countries, and unlike any city in the European Union, where mosques are silent. Macedonians may not be aware of it, but there's something called freedom in the European Union. It means that if you're not a religious person, you can live your whole life without hearing anyone praying, or calling you to prey.
Macedonia doesn't guarantee that freedom, so it has no right to join the European Union.
Mazedonien ist ein schönes Land

lol but if they try to silence their speakers, EU will get mad.
also about deserving to join EU / you really think there is people who would want something like that, to join eu?
its only governments who are pushing that agenda so they can get some money before it falls apart. people are indiferent, or against joining any alliance or superstate.
funny that someone calls it
right to join eu

Sorry for late reply, hadn't seen your post.
Actually, I don't know if Macedonians want to join the EU, but I find it strange to see adverts using Euro and not the local currency, that's all.
