Face Synthesizing AI Might Start a Fake News Boom

Neural Networks Create Accurate Facial Reconstructions

Supasorn Suwajanakorn recently posted a video of a neural network given only Obama's speech as input was able to generate these facial animations:

Concerns

Naturally, this has raised concerns* over possible malicious abuse of these techniques to create fake news and spread confusion and propaganda. I think the best medicine for ignorance is to freely share knowledge and educate ourselves on these matters.

Synthesizing Obama: Learning Lip Sync from Audio

Supasorn Suwajanakorn, Steven M. Seitz and Ira Kemelmacher-Shlizerman wrote a paper titled "Synthesizing Obama: Learning Lip Sync from Audio" for the University of Washington in which they state the following:

Given audio of President Barack Obama, we synthesize a high-quality video
of him speaking with accurate lip sync, composited into a target video clip.
Trained on many hours of his weekly address footage, a recurrent neural
network learns the mapping from raw audio features to mouth shapes. Given
the mouth shape at each time instant, we synthesize high-quality mouth
texture and composite it with proper 3D pose matching to change what he
appears to be saying in a target video to match the input audio track. Our
approach produces photorealistic results.

Here's a nice high level overview image of the neural network architecture used from the paper:

I highly encourage you to read the rest of the paper too if you're so inclined, it's great.

Great, now we don't need actual events and commentators anymore.
CNN will surely put this to good use!

Brave new world.

Not the first time, nor the last time when this issue has been brought to discussion. In my opinion, we ourselves must be capable of discerning the truth from the lies. The truth is ALWAYS historically proven and historically motivated and, in the end, will ALWAYS come out.

There is no more noble quest than the search for truth and I hope you're right.

Fake News?!
The "Real" News is already bad and full of hidden facts straight lies!!

what a terrible world we live in!!

well, I always try to quote this to make myself feel better when I see things like these.

  • Ruby: As a girl, I wanted to be one of those heroes from the books! Someone who fought for what was right, and protected people who couldn't protect themselves!
  • Blake: That's... very ambitious for a child... Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale.
  • Ruby: ...Well, that's why we're here. To make it better.
    -RWBY (episode 3)

We have to make it better.... even by little!!

I agree that it's already bad, but this type of thing could bring the believability to a whole new level and fool a smarter person too. Healthy skepticism is always good, but I think people need to be extra vigilant in the near future. I would hate to see AI become a tool for evil, but unfortunately everything that has this kind of tremendous power will inevitably be used for questionable ends.

yeah...

With Great Power Comes Great Insanity

Congratulations. This post has been chosen to feature in today's Muxxybot curation post.

I get all my news from The Onion, do you think they will use this?

Haha, that's a funny idea! They could go off the rails with this type of technology. But in all seriousness, it's good to be informed about these things. I'm not saying you should wrap yourself in tinfoil but to maintain healthy skepticism

Tinfoil hat is toward one end of a spectrum. "I don't trust the people at "BIG FOIL" to not be IN on IT man! They make tin foil silver so THEY can see who is wearing the hats". One man's crazy balls aluminum head gear is another mans reasonable precaution. Who thinks Their position on anything is unreasonable. I am struggling to find a place on the spectrum. Between everything the TV tells me and everything that Snowden leaked, what is a guy to tell his hatter? "Grab me the tin today sir it seems like the air is thick with drones" or "That organic non gmo fed TSB BPA free vegetable dye wool bowler looks right smart this fine morning ma'am". I like how tons of folk use the term sheepel like they are for sure not one. I think you are right, but what is a healthy level of skepticism? How would I know? I am afraid of using steemit for the privacy I give up, but I do (face blanked for photo recognition software). This is hard man.

i cant wait
