His body is about the size of a human index finger. Hopping around in the mud and occasionally walking. Two pairs of eyes glared as if to jump out of the head cavity. There is a green color like a circle that surrounds the yellow eye's retina. The shape of his face is strange. Nothing like fish in general. However, it is more similar to a frog. Therefore, some residents in Banda Aceh call this fish as eungkot cangguk. Eungkot refers to fish. While the cangguk, means frog.

Although his face is like a frog, but the body of this animal is just like a fish. Its body is round long resembles a torpedo. The dorsal fins are expanding, while the tail fins are round and the body length varies from a few centimeters to 30 centimeters. Really weird. Maybe this is the animal that failed in the process of adaptation from fish to amphibians. The researchers call this fish Mudskipper (in English spoken) for playing in the mud.

Mudskipper lives in shallow waters and mangrove swamps. This fish is almost like other freshwater fish, namely cork and fish shells, which are able to walk on land. This fish is also able to survive on the ground for approximately 9 minutes. Mudskipper also mentioned can climb mangrove trees because it has pectoral fins that function like a hand.

In Japan and China, these fish are often consumed by humans. People in these two countries believe that fish from this Goby family has a virtue for male virility. However, I did not get much information about it. Especially for us in Aceh, these fish live freely just and not for consumption.

Tubuhnya seukuran setengah jari telunjuk manusia. Melompat-lompat di lumpur dan sesekali berjalan. Dua pasang mata melotot seperti hendak melompat keluar dari rongga kepala. Ada warna hijau seperti lingkaran yang mengelilingi retina matanya yang kuning. Bentuk wajahnya aneh. Tidak mirip seperti ikan secara umum. Namun, lebih serupa dengan kodok. Karena itu, sebagian warga di Banda Aceh menyebut ikan ini sebagai eungkot cangguk. Eungkot merujuk kepada ikan. Sementara cangguk berarti katak.

Meskipun wajahnya mirip kodok, tetapi tubuh binatang ini justru serupa ikan. Badannya bulat panjang menyerupai torpedo. Sirip-sirip punggung terkembang, sementara sirip ekor membulat dan panjang tubuh bervariasi mulai dari beberapa sentimeter hingga 30 centimeter. Betul-betul aneh. Mungkin inilah hewan yang gagal dalam proses adaptasi dari ikan menuju amfibi. Para peneliti menyebut ikan ini Mudskipper (dalam lisan Inggris) karena suka bermain di lumpur.

Mudskipper hidup di perairan dangkal dan rawa bakau. Ikan ini hampir seperti ikan air tawar lainnya, yaitu ikan gabus dan ikan batok, yang mampu berjalan di darat. Ikan ini juga mampu bertahan di darat selama kurang lebih 9 menit. Mudskipper juga disebutkan dapat memanjat pohon bakau karena memiliki sirip pektoral yang berfungsi seperti tangan.

Di Jepang dan Cina, ikan ini sering dikonsumsi oleh manusia. Orang-orang di kedua negara ini percaya bahwa ikan dari keluarga Goby ini memiliki kebaikan untuk kejantanan laki-laki. Namun, saya tidak mendapat banyak informasi tentang itu. Khusus untuk kita di Aceh, ikan ini hidup bebas saja dan tidak untuk dikonsumsi.
