What you are looking at is a piece of glass.

To be specific, a piece of SEA glass.

Sea glass is what happens when pieces of broken glass fall into the ocean and — in a process that can take years and decades — slowly is polished smooth and "soft" by the tumbling effect of sand, pebbles and surf.

Eventually, the surface of the glass also looks slightly "dusty" or like it is coated with fine sugar.

There's no telling — ahead of time — what shape a piece of sea glass will become. Glass tends to break in pretty random shapes. Most pieces end up being somewhat angular, or oval or round.

Once in a very great, a piece will — purely by forces of nature — end up in a heart shape, like this one. It's quite a rarity!

I found this piece on one of our local beaches, a while back. It measures about 3/4" (about 19mm) across and was (based on the color) perhaps once part of a beer bottle someone discarded during their beach picnic.

It's one of those rare cases of "from trash to treasure," purely by natural forces.

Thought I'd share this for @kalemandra's popular "Color Challenge" since today is not only the day for "Thursday Green," but this also happens to be a HEART and green is the traditional color associated with the heart chakra.

What about you? Have you ever found "sea glass" on the beach? I mean this smooth kind, not sharp broken pieces! Do you enjoy beach combing? Leave a comment!

Most probably a bier bottle given its color :-)

The green color is very beautiful, heart-shaped and symbolizes love.

Lovely photograph and perfect for the green colour challenge @denmarkguy.

I love beach combing.

By the way, if you actually want to enter the contest I think the first tag has to be colorchallenge. I only discovered that mayself after entering for a few months and doing what you've done!! 😂

Thanks Gillian — yes, beach combing is a lot of fun!

Yeah, I know about the colorchallenge thing; it was an afterthought, really. I'm actually "collecting" PhotoContests points at the moment... there are so many cool initiatives to be part of.

I agree at @denmarkguy. The challenge for me is keeping up with them and posting on the right day etc. 😁

No, it ended up that shape by chance and through the forces of nature!

You can look for sea glass on any beach near a populated area where people might have left glass behind, in the past.
