This is a Garden Katydid, Caedicia simplex, which I found in the backyard today. It is still in the larval stage known as a nymph. Katydids and other Orthopterans do not go though a complete metamorphsis like a butterfly does. Rather, the larval stage gradually develops into an adult. Thus the insects below look basically like little adults. The obvious difference is that their wings have not developed. The body length if this individial was only about one inch and yet, amazingly, it jumped a distance of close to two feet.

I took the following video last year. It shows the fully winged adult stage of the Garden Katydid. Some of the video was taken with the same lens mentioned above. Other parts were taken with a Panasonic HC-VX870M. I hope you enjoy the video.
