Blood Red

in macrophotography •  7 years ago

These fantastically colour barnacles are Red Goosenecks. This rare and unique species of gooseneck barnacle only resides in one place on the planet, Tremble Island.

Red Gooseneck Barnicles-1.jpg

This tiny island is located at the intersection of two major but very narrow waterways located on the central coast of British Columbia. This wooded rock gets its name due to its said to shake during the peak tides, the currents can race past this spot at 16-20 knots.

The island’s trees are covered in numerous signs, left by the crews of ships that were trying to get in and out and had to wait for the tides. Some of the signs date back over 100 years.

A dive here, on the right day, allows you to view something truly amazing but on the wrong day it a different story.

Those are barnacles....as far as i know you dont eat barnacles.

People actually eat goose barnacles in Japan and Spain. Go figure.

@scottdphoto lovely piece of photography. If the island could talk, it would be a most extraordinary tale of Pirates of old and their unbelievable exploits.

@scottdphoto could you please recommend a Good camera for me under $1000.thank you.

WOW how did you get such a great photo?

Conrats...

The truth that this species looks like a work of art, for the details in its drawing, shape and color. I do not think I can go, but only the fact that you show us the photos is priceless. Thank you. Greetings.

Scott, one thing I like about your post is that you don't do a lot of write up rather you give concise information and then you allow your pictures to tell us the whole story. Tanks for the information about 'Red Goosenecks'.

Awesome! Look beautiful and creepy at the same time. It looks like alien thing or maybe it's because it's the first time I see it.

It's amazing and very beautiful!

Those blow away the common barnacles we see here in Florida. Very nice!

If you would tell that this was a still from an alien movie I would totally believe you. ;)

Nature's miracles... Amazing... I hear they are eaten too perhaps? or is that another species?

Those are stunning.

Gorgeous. They give California abalone a run for its money. The red and silver reminds me of muscles. Thanks for sharing, again.

Wow, those gooseneck barnacles look amazing! I've never seen anything like it and they are very photogenic! I tried to google them, and mostly got red lamps up in the search, so I totally understand that they must be very rare. :)
