Macro Photography - Solitary bees building mud homes

in macrophotography •  5 years ago

I do not think the bees will have time to fill all the holes, but they are trying. I placed these 2x4 blocks with holes drilled in them, non pressure treated but heat treated for them to make mud homes in.

These photos are my content for #macrophotography and #macrothursday

The bees already filled in the bamboo stick placed to the left, seems thats prime real estate and they filled it in a matter of days.

They will fill the holes with mud, collected from near by. Its usually an reddish orange due to the high iron in our local soil. Also known as red georgia clay, its distinctive in appearance. But the bees seem to work with it, at least the mason bees do.

Resin bees will make their homes with mud as well, but the color of the mud is white instead of red or brown like mason bees. You can tell the Resin bees also from the bright yellow underside of their abdomen.

Three of the holes appear to be homes of spiders in the left corner. The bees wont go in these holes but seem to check them out occasionally.

Within a few weeks alot of the holes will be filled, the females may have to wait another year to fill the rest though I think they will remeber this home and make good use of it. Im thinking of building more for the bees, just need to find a good place for the bees to access it.

You make it look easy but I'm so afraid of bees. Maybe I'll get over my fear and give it a try.

@bookoons Hah thanks, I used to be afraid of them too.. As I have been stung by honey bees, wasps and yellow jackets. Though these solitary mason and resin bees have never stung me.. they have gotten all up in my personal space but never threatening.

thanks alot, enjoyed being on the show.

Will definitely give it a go when I get back home and do the home veggie patch again.

Mother nature has its ways, but we can help.

After all, we are the ones who are killing her.

Well done for this, can't stress enough just how important any and every grassroots movements are when looking after life on this planet.

People "want" it all at their supermarkets, but most just don't want any of the responsibility that comes with the luxuries of having 50 different brand names to choose from for each and every item that they "want".

Three cheers to you man and thanks for this simple yet fantastic idea on how I too can contribute with a simple little offcut from a 2bi4.

@jackmiller great! please show off the house you build and mention me in the post so ill be notified. I find building them in the early spring after the first frost is over is the best time, as they look for homes as soon as it warms up.

Agreed, pollenators are crucial to many plants. As without them they will not get genetic diversity. And some plants will not produce at all without pollenation.

For the last few years ive been trying to buy my food from local farmers and at farmers markets. Trying to avoid supermarkets, we got a system down and feels real good.

thanks alot, I really enjoy watching them and they also are helping out every plant around them.
