MADAGASCAR 2018

3rd world countries are so often viewed through a lens of privilege, shedding light on all the things the country doesn’t have. Madagascar is the 7th poorest country in the world, and lacks many of the basic luxuries you and I take for granted everyday- clean water, access to education, access to healthcare, food security, access to opportunity- to name a few.

However, In the last month, I had the opportunity to instead see everything they do have. I met a community of people who, despite circumstances, exude generosity, resourcefulness, intelligence, genuine kindness, overflowing love, and pure happiness.

It was easy for me to initially feel the urge to fix, teach, help. But I learned instead to understand, learn and listen. Because at the end of the day- the rural community of Mahabo had much more to give to me than I could ever hope to give back to them.
