I can see you feel passionately about this issue @steevc and I share your passion. It is outrageous that we've not managed to find a way to stop these organised crime syndicates. African elephants, bengal tigers and so many other animals are being killed for their tusks, bones and what not. We are also encroaching upon the habitat of other species and driving them to extinction with our life choices (global warming etc). You'd think that with our current technology we should be able to find a way to stop this nonsense! I really do think we as people who care about this topic should do something - I would love to be part of a community effort and willing to give my time and energy to this cause but I am not sure where to start.

I'm glad more people are blogging about this, @steevc!

Rhinos, big cats like jaguars and tigers, elephants, pangolins and lots of other animals are currently being killed in order for the Chinese to get their non-working eastern medicine. Many of these are already on the brink of extinction, and other are about to get there very fast if the current poaching rates keep up like these days.

I expect they have looked pretty hard. They have to provide armed guards to keep the remaining ones alive. Poaching has even happened in a French zoo.

This poaching is commonly seen in Africa, the governments care less about the forest lives and almost no control measures are put in place to stop this extinction.
If we succeeded in wiping out all wide animals thinking they got some magical power, our future generations will end up seeing them in 7D and not the real thing. Really sad I must say. Reasons why the western world are good in protecting animals from extinction. In Africa, they want to meet end needs.

Maybe it makes me a bad person... but I get a smile anytime I see news of a poacher or big game hunter getting killed by their intended prey.

You've got every right to feel the way you do, and youre right, having extremes in wealth causes greed and exploitation.

We don't deserve this beautiful blue planet we get to live on.

And this is not the only problem.

What about shark finning (still common) or people dumping all the trash into the oceans. There are so many pictures of animals suffering from plastic trash that was thrown in the oceans.

As I said is just one aspect. Many people are ignorant of the impact of their actions. We need to take more responsibility. The human population has doubled in my lifetime and everyone wants more stuff

I never saw one in the wild during a safari I did in 2008 - Kenya. In fact I only spotted 3 out of the 'big 5', quite disappointing but not really surprising as there's just none left.

Fuck buyers
They are the ones that fuel the poaching& make it profitable.
Only way to end poaching is to end the buying (esp china, viatname & other asian countries). Till the ppl r paying huge profit there is someone having his life in risk...
