Magnesium (12Mg) naturally occurs in three stable isotopes, 24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg. There are 18 radioisotopes that have been discovered.

The lighter isotopes mostly decay to isotopes of sodium while the heavier isotopes decay to isotopes of aluminium.

Magnesium is the ninth most abundant element in the universe. It is produced in large, aging stars from the sequential addition of three helium nuclei to a carbonnucleus.

When such stars explode as supernovas, much of the magnesium is expelled into the interstellar medium where it may recycle into new star systems.
